Seyi Tinubu speaks at the inaugural Seyi Tinubu Colloquium in Lagos, acknowledging the hardship associated with his father’s economic reforms.
Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to trust the Federal Government’s economic reforms, saying they are intended to create opportunities and secure a better future for younger generations.
He made the call at the inaugural Seyi Tinubu Colloquium, themed ‘Shaping the Future Together’, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. on Monday.
The event attracted participants for discussions on nation-building, youth inclusion in governance and the future of Nigeria.
In his welcome address, Seyi, who is set to celebrate his birthday on October 13, said every generation inherited a country it did not choose but had a responsibility to shape for those coming after it.
He said President Tinubu’s administration had chosen to confront Nigeria’s challenges for the benefit of future generations.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not choose Nigeria, did not choose the Nigeria inherited from his predecessors, yet his administration chose to confront the challenges of our nation, not for itself alone, but for the benefit of those who come next, for us, the young generation,” he said.
Seyi identified the removal of the petrol subsidy, foreign exchange reforms and changes to the tax system as major decisions affecting the country’s economic direction.
“Removing the fuel subsidy, reforming the foreign exchange system and overhauling taxation are decisions about how Nigeria earns, spends and creates opportunities,” he said.
Acknowledging the hardship associated with the reforms, he said their effects had been particularly difficult for households whose budgets had come under pressure.
“Changes have not been easy. Families whose budgets have been stretched, the pain was immediate, the lasting improvement more difficult to feel and touch, yet they are no less real,” he said.
He, however, argued that investments in infrastructure and key sectors could provide long-term benefits, citing roads, highways and renewed investment in power, mining, manufacturing and agriculture.
According to him, such investments could improve productivity, connect producers to markets and create employment opportunities.
He also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutions that expand access to education and credit, saying they could help Nigerians compete in global markets.
“A road built today will serve people who are still children. An institution strengthened today can protect opportunities for Nigerians yet unborn,” he said.
Seyi said he supported the President’s reform agenda because young Nigerians needed an economy in which hard work could translate into meaningful rewards.
“I support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms because we will inherit a future built by leaders of today,” he said.
He added that young people also had a responsibility to participate in leadership and ensure that decisions taken by the current generation benefited Nigerians in the future.
“That is why I also believe we have the responsibility to participate in the leadership and ensure that what is decided today will benefit all of us tomorrow,” he said.
