KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vowed to personally monitor the implementation of Universiti Malaya's (UM) Student Housing Project, warning that contractors who fail to demonstrate their capability could be replaced.
Anwar said he would direct the relevant ministries and government agencies to expedite the project, stressing that it must be completed ahead of schedule and serve as a model for future student accommodation developments.
He said he would raise the matter at the cabinet meeting, directing relevant ministries and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to prioritise the project and fast-track the necessary processes.
"I will personally monitor its implementation to ensure it becomes a good example," he said in his speech before launching the UM Student Residence project today.
The UM Student Residence project is part of the university's ongoing efforts to address student accommodation needs through planned, comfortable and modern residential facilities.
The development will be carried out in two phases, with a total planned capacity of up to 40,000 students.
The first phase is expected to be completed in 2030 and will provide accommodation for 10,000 students, while the second phase is planned to accommodate an additional 30,000 students.
