Jordan’s Cabinet on Tuesday approved a draft law ratifying an extradition agreement signed between the Moroccan and Jordanian governments, paving the way for its referral to the House of Representatives in accordance with constitutional procedures, the Jordanian Prime Ministry said in a statement.
In a separate statement, Jordan’s Embassy in Rabat said the draft law reflects the close ties between the two countries and their commitment to strengthening cooperation across various fields in accordance with the law.
Last September, Moroccan Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi and his Jordanian counterpart, Bassam Talhouni, signed an agreement providing for the extradition of individuals wanted for criminal prosecution or to serve custodial sentences.
The Jordanian Justice Ministry said at the time that the agreement reflected the two countries’ commitment to strengthening legal and judicial cooperation and developing more effective mechanisms to combat crime.
It added that the agreement establishes a framework for extraditing individuals sought by either country’s judicial authorities, whether for prosecution over an alleged offense or to serve a prison sentence imposed following a criminal conviction, subject to each country’s national legislation and applicable legal safeguards.
Following the signing ceremony, Talhouni described the agreement as an important step in strengthening judicial cooperation between Jordan and Morocco. He said it would provide a more effective legal framework for extradition procedures, helping advance justice, combat crime and prevent impunity.
Talhouni also highlighted the historic ties between the two countries, established under the late King Hussein of Jordan and the late King Hassan II of Morocco. He said the agreement, supported by King Abdullah II of Jordan and King Mohammed VI of Morocco, marked a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation.
The Jordanian minister stressed that international judicial cooperation had become increasingly necessary amid rapidly evolving forms of crime, emphasizing the importance of clear legal frameworks that ensure effective procedures while respecting the rule of law and established legal safeguards.
