FORMER prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak remains in prison as the Prisons Department puts the finishing touches to regulations governing his proposed house arrest, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.
He said the department, which is responsible for implementing the Pardons Board’s decision, had received a letter from the board’s secretariat outlining the decision and its conditions.
“Specific regulations on house arrest need to be drafted because this mechanism has never been implemented before and is now being introduced for the first time.
“The drafting process is now in its final stage,” he told reporters after launching the National Anti-Drugs Agency’s (AADK) MADANI Adopted Village and MADANI Adopted School programmes at Felda Tenang today.
Saifuddin said the letter also stated that the Prisons Department could impose appropriate conditions for the arrangement.
He stressed that the Home Ministry, through the Prisons Department, was responsible for establishing clear rules to govern the implementation of house arrest.
However, Najib has yet to pay the RM50 million fine, Saifuddin said.
On Sept 18, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his six-year prison sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of the fine.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board. Najib has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison following the Court of Appeal and Federal Court decisions upholding his conviction in the SRC International case. - October 18, 2026
