Wamunyinyi announced the decision in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, saying the move came after extended reflection and consultations with constituents on the ground.
Wamunyinyi's reasons for leaving DAP-K
In his statement, Wamunyinyi framed his decision around the need for a unified opposition, singling out Sifuna as a leader who speaks to the concerns of ordinary Kenyans rather than political elites.

"After long nights of reflection and listening to the ground, I have decided to drop my position as deputy party leader of DAP-K and take my energy to walk side by side with my brother, the voice of the people, Sen. Edwin Sifuna," Wamunyinyi wrote.
He described Sifuna's appeal as rooted in everyday struggles: "Because Sifuna is not speaking the language of boardrooms, he is speaking the language of mama mboga, boda boda, the jobless youth, and the forgotten farmer. That is the Linda Mwananchi spirit."
Wamunyinyi stressed that his exit was not driven by animosity towards DAP-K and revealed he had personally reached out to party leader Eugene Wamalwa to encourage him to join Sifuna's camp.
"I have reached out to my party leader, my brother Eugene Wamalwa, and told him plainly—Kuja tatembea pamoja. Come, let us go and support Sifuna. History will not forgive us if we scatter the opposition vote while Mwananchi is suffering," he said.
He concluded by assuring his Kanduyi constituents that the Linda Mwananchi platform represented the winning path into 2027, adding, "I am in Linda Mwananchi; I am with Sifuna. To my supporters in Kanduyi, this is the winning team. Kanduyi 2027 is safe."
DAP-K hollowed out as officials exit
Meanwhile, Wamunyinyi's departure is part of a broader exodus that has significantly weakened DAP-K's senior leadership.
Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya had announced his exit after a fallout with Wamalwa over the party's direction.
Former Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, and Cherangany MP Patrick Simiyu have also publicly backed Sifuna.
The wave of resignations signals deepening fractures within the opposition ahead of the 2027 election cycle, as various political figures reposition themselves around emerging coalitions.
