The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Manipur unit, staged a protest rally in Imphal on Friday, demanding the resignation of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over sexual harassment allegations levelled against him by some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
The protesters called for justice for the students who raised the allegations and demanded accountability, stating that the matter had caused embarrassment to Manipur.
The rally began at the BJP headquarters at Nityapat Chuthek and proceeded towards Congress Bhavan. Security personnel were deployed in large numbers along the route to prevent any untoward incident.
Carrying placards bearing messages such as “We Demand Justice”, “We Demand Truth” and “Save the Dignity of Manipur”, the BJYM members raised slogans against Akoijam and called for his resignation.
Tensions were witnessed outside Congress Bhavan as the protesters raised slogans demanding justice. Members of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), standing behind barricades at the entrance, responded with counter-slogans, including “Shame, shame BJP”.
Police personnel stopped the protesters from entering the Congress Bhavan premises and managed the situation.
Speaking during the protest, a BJYM member questioned the silence of senior Congress leaders, including those in the All India Congress Committee, over the allegations. The member also referred to Rahul Gandhi’s stated commitment to fighting patriarchy and asked why the party leadership had not responded more firmly to the matter.
The BJYM member said the allegations involving a professor from Manipur serving at a reputed university were a matter of concern for the state. The youth wing, the member added, wanted the truth to come out and justice to be delivered.
Reacting to the rally, an executive member of the MPCC questioned why the BJP’s youth wing was demanding justice from the opposition when the BJP-led government has 55 MLAs in the state, compared to the Congress’s five.
The Congress representative described the protest as unusual and claimed that people stood with Akoijam. Expressing confidence in the outcome, the representative said the Congress would ultimately celebrate the triumph of truth and justice.
The protest comes amid demands for accountability over the allegations against the Congress MP. The allegations remain subject to the legal and investigative process and have not been established as findings of guilt.
