(ANSA) - ROME, 22 OTT - Istat said Thursday that 426,956 new resident permits were issued to foreign nationals in Italy last year, a 47.2% increase on the 290,119 issued in 2024.
The national statistics agency said that this was the second-highest number in the last 15 years, coming behind only the high of 2022 caused by the influx of refugees from Ukraine following the Russian invasion.
The increase was primarily driven by permits granted for family reasons, up 61.2%, and for study, up 76.0%.
Work-related permits increased by 45.9%, and in 83.2% of cases, they were granted to men.
Asylum applications fell by 15% and 70% of initial applications were rejected. (ANSA).
