The updated policy will allow projects to be considered without an initial presumption against development, while retaining climate compatibility assessments. The revised strategy is expected by summer, according to senior government officials.
The Scottish National Party has adopted a resolution supporting domestic oil and gas production over imports.
The decision will inform the government’s forthcoming energy strategy. Meanwhile, the UK government is expected to approve the Jackdaw gas field, with a separate decision on the Rosebank oil field anticipated later. Licensing authority remains primarily with the UK government.
