The High Court (HC) has published the full verdict in a case concerning Tk 666 crore in income tax claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) from Grameen Kalyan, an organisation owned by Dr Muhammad Yunus, former chief adviser to the interim government.
Two separate verdicts, spanning 15 and 32 pages, were published on the Supreme Court website on Monday.
Earlier, on September 10, a High Court bench led by Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia delivered the verdict. The full text of the verdict was published on Monday, directing Grameen Kalyan to pay the Tk 666 crore as soon as possible.
Following the July mass uprising, the High Court suo motu withdrew its earlier verdict on October 4 of that year, which had ordered Grameen Kalyan to pay the Tk 666 crore claimed by the NBR.
A bench led by Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar withdrew the verdict and sent the case documents to the chief justice. The case was subsequently assigned to a new bench.
Following a reassessment, Grameen Kalyan filed separate writ petitions in 2017 challenging the tax claims for the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 tax years.
After preliminary hearings, the court issued rules in the cases. Following the final hearing, the new High Court bench discharged the rules.
With the writ petitions dismissed, the NBR can now recover the Tk 666 crore in income tax from Grameen Kalyan.
