Someone just put roughly $17.05 million on the line betting that CoreWeave stock is headed a lot higher. The timing is notable: the trade landed after a week in which the AI cloud provider’s shares were treated like a hot potato.
On October 21, 2026, an investor bought CoreWeave (CRWV) $85 call options expiring March 19, 2027. With the stock trading near $62, that is a wager on a sizable recovery, not a modest bounce.
Inside the trade
The purchase covered 25,000 contracts at about $6.82 apiece. Each standard equity option contract represents 100 shares, which is how the math reaches roughly $17.05 million in premium.
For the position to pay off at expiration, CoreWeave needs to trade above about $91.82. That figure is the $85 strike plus the $6.82 premium paid per share.
The stock was recently changing hands near $62, after intraday lows around $59. So the buyer is effectively saying the shares can climb from the low $60s to the low $90s within roughly five months.
The volume was nearly 15 times the existing open interest on that contract. Put simply, this was fresh money opening a new position, not someone shuffling an old one around.
It was not a lonely bet either. Another sweep of about $10.5 million hit the same $85 contract. That followed a $14.9 million trade in $80 calls on October 20, 2026.
Why the stock got crushed
The stock fell about 25% in the week before October 21, 2026, and was down roughly 30% month-to-date.
CoreWeave reportedly carries around $50 billion to $52 billion in debt as of October 2026. Yields on the company’s bonds reached 15% to 16%. Five-year credit default swap spreads hit about 1,000 to 1,200 basis points before stabilizing.
Goldman Sachs upgraded CoreWeave to Buy on October 19, 2026, citing signs of resilient demand. Goldman Sachs and other analysts have argued that the market’s reaction may not fully reflect CoreWeave’s operational strength, leaning heavily on the company’s backlog and its relationship with Nvidia.
CoreWeave reported a revenue backlog of $104.2 billion as of Q2 2026. Nvidia also provides a backstop for CoreWeave’s unsold capacity through 2032.
From crypto miner to AI landlord
CoreWeave was founded as Atlantic Crypto in 2017 and pivoted to cloud services in 2019. The same graphics processors once pointed at crypto mining now run AI workloads for paying customers.
What this means for CoreWeave watchers
The call buyers are betting that the backlog and Nvidia relationship matter more than the debt headlines. Calls are leveraged instruments, and if CoreWeave does not clear about $91.82 by March 19, 2027, the buyer of that $85 position could lose some or all of the premium.
Bond yields in the 15% to 16% range and CDS spreads near 1,000 basis points or higher are not normal conditions, even with the recent stabilization. If those measures keep easing, it would support the argument that debt fears were overstated.
The key questions are whether CoreWeave can convert that $104.2 billion backlog into cash flow and keep spending under control while servicing a debt load reported at roughly $50 billion or more.
