The Oklahoma City Thunder visit the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, October 20, in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference finals. San Antonio eliminated Oklahoma City in seven games, adding an immediate edge to this opener. Tipoff at Frost Bank Center is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
The matchup places Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s shot creation against Victor Wembanyama’s defensive reach. Both teams enter with championship expectations, but San Antonio’s home court and recent success against Oklahoma City make the Spurs a slight favorite in an otherwise closely matched contest.

Thunder vs. Spurs Key Injuries
Oklahoma City will be without Nikola Topic because of a back injury and Thomas Sorber because of a knee issue. Otega Oweh is also sidelined following an Achilles injury. Those absences reduce the Thunder’s depth, although their established core remains the focus of the matchup.
Chet Holmgren missed the preseason with a quadriceps contusion, but Tuesday reporting indicates he is expected to play. Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are also absent from the latest injury report. Holmgren’s conditioning and rhythm remain worth watching even if he has no formal restriction.
San Antonio will be without Tobias Harris because of a calf strain and rookie Jayden Quaintance because of a knee injury. Harris’ absence removes a veteran frontcourt option, placing greater importance on the remaining rotation’s spacing and defensive rebounding.
Thunder Betting Trends
Oklahoma City went 4-8 straight up and ATS across 12 meetings with San Antonio, including the regular season, NBA Cup and playoffs. That history deserves attention without being treated as destiny.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s efficiency is central to changing that pattern. He shot below 41% from the field and 28% from three during the Western Conference finals. Oklahoma City needs cleaner driving lanes and quicker ball movement rather than repeatedly asking him to attack a set defense.
Isaiah Hartenstein’s passing offers one solution. Using him as a high-post connector can punish defensive attention directed toward Oklahoma City’s primary scorers. The Thunder should benefit if those possessions produce cuts and open shots instead of contested late-clock attempts.
Spurs Betting Trends
San Antonio’s head-to-head success extended beyond the playoffs. The Spurs went 4-1 straight up and against the spread in their regular-season and NBA Cup meetings with Oklahoma City, despite Wembanyama starting only twice across those five games.
The Spurs also finished 18-12 ATS against opponents with winning percentages of at least .600 last regular season. That record suggests they handled strong competition effectively, although it does not guarantee another cover on opening night.
More importantly, San Antonio won the rebounding, three-point and free-throw-attempt battles across last season’s 12 meetings. Those advantages supplied multiple routes to victory rather than forcing the Spurs to depend entirely on Wembanyama’s scoring.
Keys to the Matchup
Oklahoma City must move Wembanyama away from the basket. Holmgren’s perimeter positioning and Hartenstein’s passing can create space, but the Thunder must convert the opportunities that follow.
San Antonio needs its guards to protect possession. De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper can share creation duties, reducing the burden on any single initiator.
Rebounding could decide a one-possession spread. Neither team can afford to defend well for most of the shot clock and then concede second chances.
Thunder vs. Spurs Prediction and Pick
Oklahoma City has enough offensive talent to stay close, but San Antonio’s matchup history and home court provide the stronger foundation. Expect Wembanyama’s defensive influence to matter most during the closing possessions.
