Violinist Seol Ji-young will perform the complete violin sonatas of Johannes Brahms, a leading figure of German Romanticism.
Artium Production, the concert promoter, said on the 12th that Seol will hold a recital titled "Brahms, Three Perspectives" at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei on Oct. 18, performing the three violin sonatas Brahms left behind. Pianist Shin Min-chul will join her on stage.
Brahms composed three violin sonatas over the course of his life. The First Sonata in G major, Op. 78, subtitled "Rain Sonata," highlights the composer's distinctively wistful and lyrical sensibility. The Second Sonata in A major, Op. 100, written while Brahms spent a summer in Thun, Switzerland, is marked by a gentle, pastoral mood. The Third Sonata in D minor, Op. 108, his only sonata in four movements, expresses inner turmoil and dark tension within an intense surge of energy.
Seol graduated from Sunhwa Arts Middle and High School and the College of Music at Ewha Womans University before completing a master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg in Germany. Since returning to Korea, she has performed actively as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player, while teaching at Sunhwa Arts Middle and High School, Kaywon Arts Middle School and Incheon Arts High School. Shin graduated from the piano department at Hanyang University, completed a master's degree and a soloist diploma at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany, and is an adjunct professor at Hanyang University.
