The Peruvian economy retains macroeconomic strengths—rare among countries in the South American region—that help it withstand external shocks, highlighted Felipe James Callao, president of the National Society of Industries (SNI), today.
“The Peruvian economy possesses strengths that very few countries in the region have: superior macroeconomic figures, high international reserves, and a low debt-to-GDP ratio,” he stated.
“It also features controlled inflation, a stable exchange rate, and improving expectations for investment and hiring,” he added.
He made these remarks during the Peru Banking & Finance Summit 2026, organized by El Dorado Investments. There, he highlighted an announcement by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Elmer Cuba, regarding a robust countercyclical fiscal policy designed to prevent an economic slowdown and to sustain both investment and employment.
“We agree with the criteria of acting in a timely manner, ensuring that measures are targeted, temporary, and measurable, preserving fiscal sustainability, and mobilizing the financial system. A countercyclical policy that lacks these five criteria would not be a stimulus, but rather a future problem,” he noted.
Furthermore, the SNI president highlighted two recent government decisions: the declaration of a state of emergency for the textile and apparel sector, as well as for the fishing and aquaculture sector.
“The first is a 120-day state of emergency for the fishing and aquaculture sector, which encompasses research, regulatory management, administrative streamlining, commercialization, and access to financing. The second is a 120-day state of emergency for the textile and apparel sector,” he pointed out.
“It is a sound first step, but its effectiveness does not depend on decrees; rather, it hinges on how quickly it is translated into operational tools. For this reason, we hope it will be incorporated into the countercyclical measures of the Ministry of Economy and Finance,” he emphasized.
