Mokokchung, Oct 21: The Ao Senden on Wednesday closed down the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) office indefinitely in Mokokchung over the Nagaland Health and Family Welfare Department’s failure to address its demands concerning Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH).
Officials of Ao Senden are being assisted by volunteers of the Ao Lanur Telongjem (ALT) in carrying out the agitation. The move follows the organisation’s warning to launch its own course of action from October 21 if its demands remained unfulfilled.
The agitation stems from a 30-day ultimatum issued on September 16 to the Principal Director of the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland, through the CMO, Mokokchung. The organisation sought urgent measures to address staffing shortages and infrastructure concerns at IMDH, a key healthcare facility serving Mokokchung and neighbouring areas.
Ao Senden had placed three demands before the department that included replacement posting of a radiologist and a dermatologist at IMDH, shifting hospital services to the newly constructed Block A and cancellation of all attachment orders of doctors and nurses, with the personnel reverted to the district hospital.
The organisation maintained that IMDH had been functioning without essential specialists and with depleted staff because personnel originally posted at the hospital were serving elsewhere.
The dispute intensified after the Health and Family Welfare Department responded to the ultimatum. In a letter dated October 17, Ao Senden rejected the department’s response, stating that none of its demands had been fulfilled.
The organisation also objected to the release of a senior specialist radiologist from IMDH before a replacement had joined. It said it had earlier requested that the doctor not be released until a successor was in place. Ao Senden further maintained that providing a sonologist would not meet its demand for a specialist in radiodiagnosis.
