YouTube comments are about to get much busier, like Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms. Google has updated the YouTube Data API v3 revision history to include a new field for comment image URLs. This means images and GIF animations will be available to everyone starting in November 2026.
So far, YouTube comments have only allowed text and emoji. There has been some limited GIF support on the mobile app through a special library.
This update is part of a bigger set of changes. Soon, people watching YouTube on TV will be able to leave comments by speaking instead of typing with a remote. Creators will also get new tools to manage comments, which are still being tested. Channel memberships will have a members-only area for posts and discussions, along with a new page to explore membership levels.
YouTube already announced the GIF feature at the Made on YouTube event, so it is not completely new. GIFs will come from a special in-app library and will only be available in the mobile app.
On Reddit’s r/YouTube channel, some people say they can see GIFs under videos, while others say they cannot post them yet. This feature isn’t just for Premium users, since it’s rolling out to everyone.
As expected, many people on Reddit are not happy about this change. One user said it will ruin the usual YouTube experience, and others worry the comments will become as messy as TikTok’s. Some users are even looking for ways to avoid the new feature.
Some people suggest blocking GIF comments with adblock-style tools or by not updating the app. One commenter was glad to still be using an old version, while another wished GIFs were only allowed in Shorts.
Of course, not everyone thinks this is a bad idea. Apps like Instagram already have GIFs, and many users enjoy them. Still, there is a practical side to consider. Written comments that explain a problem or ask questions are often more helpful than just an animation, and many people use YouTube for that reason.
Users have complained that YouTube comments are now full of bots, with very few real comments left on some videos. YouTube may need to add an option to hide GIFs, and the early negative feedback suggests this could happen.
Creators who depend on feedback may want this option even more than viewers, since comments are often very helpful to them. Too many images or GIFs could make it harder to sort through feedback quickly. We will have to wait and see how many YouTube comments still use words by November.
