Isaac Alade, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the June 20 governorship election in Ekiti State, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Alade announced his decision in a statement on Saturday, explaining that he had reconsidered his political future after withdrawing his petition involving the SDP.
He said the APC offered a more suitable platform to contribute to the development of Ekiti State and Nigeria.
In his declaration letter, made available to Sunday Punch, the former governorship candidate praised Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, citing his administration’s projects and what he described as its people-oriented leadership.
Alade described Oyebanji as hardworking, humble and respectful, adding that the governor’s commitment to the welfare of Ekiti residents influenced his decision to support the administration.
The politician also expressed support for Tinubu’s economic policies, acknowledging that Nigerians were facing significant challenges, including food scarcity, insecurity, high fuel prices and the rising cost of living.
Despite these difficulties, he urged citizens to remain patient, arguing that rebuilding the economy would require time, unity and collective effort.
Alade maintained that continuity in governance could promote sustainable development when it served the national interest. He consequently endorsed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office.
“Consequently, I, Alade Isaac Adedayo, hereby formally declare my departure from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and my decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he stated.
