An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on October 11, 2026, after a passenger’s power bank caught fire in an overhead bin mid-air. Cabin crew contained the blaze, and the Airbus A321 landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. No injuries were reported.
The aircraft was operating as flight 6E6115. Around 180 passengers and seven crew members were on board.
Smoke in Overhead Bin Forced Diversion
Smoke came from a customer’s personal electronic device stored in the overhead compartment, IndiGo said in a statement. Multiple reports identified the device as a power bank.
Cabin crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control. Reports said crew used a fire extinguisher to contain the blaze. Viral passenger videos circulating online also showed travelers trying to smother the flames with bags.
Pilots then diverted the flight under established safety protocols and landed safely in Hyderabad.
Timeline of Flight 6E6115
FlightAware data shows the Airbus A321 took off from Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport at about 1:30 pm. It was scheduled to reach Chennai at 4 pm. Instead, it landed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at about 3:59 pm.
IndiGo arranged an alternate aircraft so passengers could continue to Chennai. The airline said it regretted the inconvenience and was offering refreshments and updates.
What Airline Rules Say About Power Banks
IndiGo’s baggage policy allows power banks and spare lithium batteries only in hand baggage. They must stay within the passenger’s personal reach at all times — for example under the seat, in the seat pocket, or on the person — and must not be stowed in overhead compartments or checked baggage.
Aviation sources note that power banks use lithium-ion batteries that can overheat and catch fire.
