- NACADA enforcement officers raided a notorious illicit brew den in the Soweto slums of Kahawa West, Kiambu County
- The operation, which was triggered by community intelligence, uncovered kangara and changaa being produced in an informal settlement
- Officers arrested one adult male at the scene and escorted him to Kasarani Police Station to await arraignment
The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has carried out a major enforcement operation in Kahawa West's Soweto slums in Kiambu County, seizing and destroying more than 29,240 litres of kangara and 140 litres of changaa.
Acting on intelligence received from the public, NACADA's enforcement team descended on a known illicit brew den within the informal settlement and dismantled all equipment and materials used in the production of the harmful substances.
Everything was destroyed at the scene in line with standard enforcement procedures.
One adult male was apprehended during the raid and transferred to Kasarani Police Station, where he awaits arraignment.
He is expected to face charges under the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act of 2010, which prescribes stiff penalties including fines and imprisonment for the manufacture and possession of illicit alcohol.
NACADA CEO hails the operation
Speaking shortly after the crackdown, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa praised the enforcement team and underscored the authority's determination to protect communities from the dangers of illicit brews.

"This operation is a clear demonstration that NACADA will not relent in the fight against illicit alcohol and harmful substances. The destruction of over 29,000 litres of kangara and changaa is a significant blow to the illegal trade that continues to destroy lives, families, and communities. We thank the public for the information that made this operation possible and encourage continued cooperation," Omerikwa said.
The threat of kangara and changaa
Kangara and changaa are potent illicit spirits commonly produced in unregulated settings within informal settlements.
Both have been linked to severe health crises, including deaths, blindness, and organ failure, making their proliferation a persistent public health concern in Kenya.
The Kahawa West operation reflects NACADA's increasing reliance on community-sourced intelligence to identify and dismantle illicit brew networks.
The authority has consistently called on the public to report suspicious activity related to the production, distribution, and sale of harmful substances, assuring informants of strict confidentiality.
The crackdown forms part of a broader national enforcement strategy under the NACADA Act of 2012, which mandates the authority to reduce both the supply of and demand for harmful substances.
Complementing these enforcement activities, NACADA recently validated Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Guidelines designed to strengthen grassroots-level prevention, treatment, and recovery services.
The authority has urged the public to continue channelling reports through its official platforms.
