Tron founder Justin Sun says AI and quantum computing have made him more bearish on bitcoin than before, while Bitmex co-founder Arthur Hayes says nobody should sell over the quantum threat.
Key Takeaways
- Justin Sun said in a recent interview that AI and quantum risks have made him more bearish on bitcoin.
- Arthur Hayes believes address hygiene and newer signatures can handle quantum risk adequately.
- Bitcoin is trading near $81,900 as Sun warns a network-wide upgrade within two years is nearly impossible.
Sun’s Bear Case
Sun made his case in an interview last week, arguing that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and quantum computing have made him more bearish on bitcoin than ever before. He argued that the industry and investors holding bitcoin through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) had not fully priced in either risk.
His sharpest point was about timing, with Sun suggesting AI progress in mathematics could let ordinary computers break today’s cryptography before a quantum machine ever does. He added:
Most [people] in the crypto industry have no idea how slow Bitcoin’s consensus mechanism is. Completing an upgrade across the entire Bitcoin network within two years would be nearly impossible.
He also took a shot at Wall Street, saying fund managers at institutions like Blackrock “have not spent nearly enough time studying this issue.”
That said, one key thing to keep in mind is that Sun runs a competing chain, Tron, which is currently in the process of implementing the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) post-quantum standards. The upgrades are expected on mainnet as early as next year.
Hayes’ Hold Case
Hayes answered the fear directly during his own interview, making it abundantly clear that no one should be selling bitcoin because of quantum computing. Hayes further elaborated:
All you need is proper address hygiene. Use up-to-date signatures. Don’t use wallets that Satoshi used. We know what we’re supposed to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s real. If BTC doesn’t go to $0, it will be irrelevant.
That matches what he’s been saying for quite some time now. As recently as Oct. 8, he called AI encryption fears the latest “wall of worry” for a new bull run. A week later, he called the AI boom a waste of money whose bust would end in money printing that lifts bitcoin.
Where They Actually Disagree
Both men agree the threat exists, but they disagree about how fast Bitcoin can respond to it.
- Sun: Bitcoin’s consensus is too slow to finish a network-wide fix in two years, and ETF holders are not pricing that in.
- Hayes: The fix for an individual holder already exists. Move coins away from exposed addresses and use current signature schemes.
The data splits the difference, as Glassnode estimates over $500 billion in bitcoin sits in addresses whose public keys are already visible, which is exactly the exposure Hayes says good hygiene avoids. Satoshi-era coins can’t follow his advice unless their owners return. Meanwhile, Google’s “magic” quantum claim and a smashed computing record have kept the issue hot, and nine blockchain groups have moved to form an alliance in response.
