The Gambia will use $2.57 million recovered from the sale of a mansion owned by former President Yahya Jammeh in the United States to compensate victims of human rights abuses during his rule.
The Gambia Reparations Commission announced on Tuesday that it had received $2,573,414.10 from the sale of the property in Maryland, which US authorities linked to proceeds of crime and misappropriated Gambian public funds.
The commission said the money would be managed responsibly and transparently, with due consideration for the rights and needs of victims and survivors.
It added that the recovery represented an important step towards addressing the suffering of those affected by abuses under Jammeh’s administration.
Jammeh ruled The Gambia for more than two decades after seizing power in a 1994 coup. His tenure was marked by allegations of torture, forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations.
In 2022, the United States secured the right to sell the Maryland property on the grounds that it had been acquired with criminal proceeds and misappropriated Gambian public funds.
A Gambian commission of inquiry subsequently uncovered an extensive property and financial network linked to the former president. It identified 281 properties in The Gambia, alongside properties in the United States and Morocco, and more than 100 bank accounts.
The inquiry concluded that Jammeh had misappropriated more than $300 million, which it said could not be accounted for by his official salary.
Jammeh lost the 2016 presidential election to Adama Barrow but initially rejected the results after accepting defeat. He eventually left office in January 2017 following intense regional and international pressure and went into exile in Equatorial Guinea.
West African troops, including forces from Senegal, had been deployed to The Gambia amid efforts to enforce the election outcome.
A commission investigating abuses during Jammeh’s rule found that between 240 and 250 Gambians and non-Gambians had died at the hands of the state or its agents.
The recovered funds are expected to contribute to reparations for victims and survivors seeking redress for abuses committed during the former president’s administration.
