- The woman, who was from Kirwarwa village in Mutithi Ward, died at the scene after the motorcycle hit her as she crossed at a pedestrian crossing to access the road beneath the dual carriageway flyover.
Residents of Makutano in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, are demanding tougher traffic enforcement at the busy junction after a woman was killed by a speeding motorcycle rider while crossing at a pedestrian crossing.
The woman, who was from Kirwarwa village in Mutithi Ward, died at the scene after the motorcycle hit her as she crossed at a pedestrian crossing to access the road beneath the dual carriageway flyover.
According to a resident, Peter Mwangi, the motorcycle dragged the woman for about 100 metres before the rider abandoned it and fled.
Mwangi said residents intervened after some boda boda operators allegedly attempted to remove the motorcycle from the scene. Traffic police officers later arrived.
The incident occurred on a busy market day, when the area attracts large numbers of traders and pedestrians.
Residents accused some motorcycle riders of speeding and disregarding pedestrian crossing rules, saying the behaviour poses a risk to people using the busy junction.
Residents, including Lydia Wairiuko and Sarah Ngina, called on authorities to take action against motorists who violate traffic regulations.
They noted that Makutano is a major junction connecting the Makutano-Sagana-Karatina and Makutano-Mwea-Embu roads, as well as the dual carriageway, making traffic management and pedestrian safety a concern.
They urged traffic authorities to strengthen enforcement and ensure motorists observe pedestrian crossing rules to prevent further accidents.
