A Yobe State High Court in Damaturu has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for the murder of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.
The judgment was delivered on Wednesday by the Chief Judge of the court, Justice G.K. Kaigama, after the prosecution presented eight witnesses in support of its case.
Musa was arrested by the Yobe State Police Command on January 4, 2024, following the death of his 42-year-old wife at their residence in New Bra-Bra Housing Estate, Damaturu.
He was subsequently arraigned on a charge of culpable homicide.
During police investigations, Musa reportedly claimed that an unidentified man had attacked his wife while they were sleeping on the same bed.
According to his account, he awoke after hearing his wife scream and discovered that she had sustained a stab wound to her neck and was bleeding profusely.
He further alleged that he saw a man carrying a knife and attempted to confront him, but two other individuals reportedly intervened and helped the suspect escape.
Musa maintained his innocence throughout the trial, insisting through his defence counsel that intruders had broken into their home and killed his wife.
However, after considering the evidence presented before the court, Justice Kaigama found the defendant guilty of culpable homicide.
The judge held that the prosecution had successfully established all the essential elements of the offence and proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Justice Kaigama subsequently imposed the death sentence by hanging on the convict.
The court also informed Musa of his right to appeal the judgment within 30 days, in accordance with the applicable law.
