Two PSNI vehicles were damaged after masked youths attacked police during disorder in Derry.
Officers came under attack in the Creevagh Heights area of the city on Friday night, where a number of youths gathered and began making threats of violence towards police.
Stones and bottles were thrown at officers, causing damage to two police vehicles, while some of those involved wore masks and were armed with weapons. Others were carrying tins of paint and fireworks.
The Creevagh Road, country-bound, was closed during the disorder.
PSNI Superintendent Claire Hamilton condemned the violence as “completely unacceptable behaviour”.
She said officers had been present in Creevagh Heights as part of an ongoing policing operation when they came under attack.
“Attacking officers while they’re performing duties to protect the public” was unacceptable, she said, adding that the behaviour was not welcomed by the wider community.
Supt Hamilton said a public safety operation remained in place following the incident.
Police also engaged with local community representatives and appealed for calm as the operation continued.
The superintendent urged those involved in the disorder to stop their actions and refrain from further violence.
The PSNI said no injuries were reported. Crowds dispersed at around 11.30pm and no further reports of disturbance were received overnight.
