Police in Parsa district arrested 103 people in mid-September to mid-October who had been convicted in various cases but had evaded prison sentences or failed to pay court-imposed fines, the District Police Office said.
The detainees face a combined 40 years, 11 months and 12 days in prison and more than Rs27 million in fines, according to police data. The arrests were made under a campaign to enforce court verdicts.
Police said the arrests were necessary to ensure that court rulings were carried out, as the continued evasion of prison terms and fines had left judicial decisions unenforced. Legal proceedings to enforce the sentences and recover the fines will now move forward in accordance with court orders and the law.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Chakra Bahadur Malla, spokesperson for the District Police Office, said the search for convicted people who had evaded punishment remained a priority.
Police said they would continue the campaign, adding that enforcing prison sentences and fines was essential to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the effectiveness of judicial decisions.
