Former Fulham goalkeeper, John Vaughan, has died at the age of 62, prompting tributes from clubs he represented during his playing and coaching career.
Fulham confirmed the news in a statement on its X handle on Thursday, expressing sadness over the passing of the former shot-stopper and extending condolences to his family, friends and former teammates.
“Vaughan spent two seasons at Craven Cottage between 1986 and 1988, making 44 league appearances for the club. He joined Fulham from West Ham United and became a regular in the team before losing his place following the arrival of Jim Stannard.
“During his time at Fulham, Vaughan was named the club’s Supporters’ Player of the Year. He was also in goal when the Whites suffered a 10-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Littlewoods Cup,” Fulham added.
Following his departure from Fulham in 1988, Vaughan joined Cambridge United, where he enjoyed the most successful period of his playing career.
He spent five seasons with Cambridge, making 231 appearances in all competitions and helping the club secure successive promotions between 1989 and 1991.
Vaughan later played for Charlton Athletic, Preston North End and Lincoln City before bringing his playing career to a close.
He subsequently moved into coaching, working as a goalkeeping coach at several clubs, including York City, Macclesfield Town, Grimsby Town, Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City, Barnsley and Bradford City.
At the time of his death, Vaughan was working as an academy coach at Sheffield United.
Fulham extended their condolences to Vaughan’s loved ones, while Cambridge United also paid tribute to the former goalkeeper, remembering his contribution to the club during a memorable era in its history.
