Inside alleged plot against Hindu temple
TOI correspondent from Washington: A malfunctioning rifle stood between a 19-year old white supremacist and his alleged intention to massacre Indians at a temple near Chicago.
Alexandros Paporakis’s plan reportedly came unstuck when his gun got jammed and he contacted a co-worker to say he had escaped “super-fast” and was trying to figure out how to fix the issue so he could carry out the attack later. He subsequently shared electronic messages showing an AR-style rifle failing to fire, along with a photograph of himself wearing a tactical vest. The communications alarmed two colleagues, who then contacted 911.
Police from Palatine and neighbouring Mount Prospect coordinated their response and arrested Paporakis as he was leaving his home that afternoon.Local TV footage showed a young man being handcuffed by the police in a parking lot and being taken away. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armour and items bearing Nazi or white-supremacist imagery.
Investigators also recovered a gas canister labelled with a racial slur directed at South Asians, according to prosecutors and police. The FBI, which ironically is led by a MAGA-supporting Indian-American Kash Patel, is reported to be assisting the case.At the centre of the investigation is an eight-page document titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto)”. Prosecutors say it denigrated Indians, Jews and African Americans as “subhumans” and described a plan to kill as many people as possible.
Paporakis allegedly described himself in the document as a “sociopathic white supremacist Neo Nazi filled with hatred, fantasizing about mass murder nearly every day”.Court documents cited by local broadcasters indicate that the alleged planning had been going on for two years. A judge ordered Paporakis held pending trial; his next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.The case has intensified concerns among Hindu organisations about the safety of temples and worshippers.
The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) welcomed the swift law-enforcement response and urged people to remain vigilant and report potential threats, adding that every community deserved to worship without fear.Aurora police also contacted Hindu temples in their jurisdiction after being alerted to the alleged plan. Authorities said they had identified no continuing public threat linked to the case. The episode comes amid mounting anti-Indian hostility in the US, particularly on social media, with immigration and the H-1B visa program increasingly becoming flashpoints.
A report by the Centre for the Study of Organised Hate, published in September, found that online anti-South Asian hate had surged, with Indians targeted over immigration status and allegations that foreign workers were taking American jobs. Some community leaders have also spoken about Indians being targeted on account of envy at their success, which was once a matter of admiration but appears to have become a source of resentment in the MAGA era.Surveys show Indian-Americans, by far, rank as the highest-earning and most educated ethnic group in the US, with a median household income exceeding $151,000 and roughly 77% holding a bachelor's or advanced degree. For nearly five million people of Indian origin in the US, the immediate concern is more tangible: whether families can attend a temple, children can participate in religious festivals and communities can gather without fearing that their visibility makes them targets. For the worldwide Indian diaspora, numbering more than 35 million, the case is a reminder that professional success and economic integration do not automatically guarantee acceptance.
