During the renovation works scheduled for next autumn, the Vanšu Bridge will remain partially open to traffic, Rīga’s mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs (Progressives) said in an interview on the Latvian Television programme “Morning Panorama”.
During the repair works, the Vanšu Bridge will remain open to traffic – with at least one lane in each direction. The only exception will be when the bridge’s cables are being replaced, Kleinbergs explained.
At the same time, he did not deny that junctions would need to be reconfigured for the duration of the repair works to ensure the flow of traffic via the planned temporary bridge: “There will be a tender process in which we will design the reconfiguration of various junctions for the duration of the repair works.”
Kleinbergs pointed out that the State Joint Stock Company “Latvian State Roads” (LVC) has already prepared a tender for the procurement of a temporary bridge, but for a longer period – until 2029. However, an agreement has been reached with the manufacturer that it can be produced by next autumn. “It is possible that no additional purchases will even be necessary,” noted Kleinbergs. The temporary bridge will also be usable for other purposes once the Vanšu Bridge has been renovated, he noted
When asked who would cover the costs of the temporary bridge, Kleinbergs said that “LVC already has an existing contract, but the Ministry of Finance will have to work to reallocate funding from future years to this one. As for the reconstruction of the piers, this will most likely be funded by the local authority.”
