An announcement interrupted the hum and buzz of audience conversation: “At this time, ladies and gentlemen, the Village Gate takes the greatest pleasure in presenting the amazing Miss Nina Simone.” Fresh on the heels of cutting short a run at the Round Table in New York City because of noisy audiences, Simone stepped out onto the raised stage and her presence set the tone. She was taking control in her personal and professional life. The whistles and applause on the recording of the concert bleed into a song to a love, “Just in Time.” She sang, “Just in time you found me just in time. / Before you came my time was running low.” She was expressing gratitude to a romantic partner who had rescued her from loneliness. She could just as well have been thanking the Village Gate for being a dependable space for her artmaking during the past three years.
Leading up to the 1962 release of Nina at the Village Gate, she had maintained a grueling schedule of touring and recording. She often found herself rushing from city to city, chasing financial freedom, as her artistic goal of being a classical musician remained out of reach. She released seven albums in four years, beginning with her debut, Little Girl Blue, in 1959. Fans adored her, but their praise was no substitute for the closeness of intimates. Her third live recording, Nina at the Village Gate, offers both a portal to the event and a window into how she constructed her musical and political worlds.
Simone…commanded a room, captivating audiences with unexpected combinations of genres and her ability to surrender herself completely to the music.
Entering the club to hear Simone perform between March 30 and April 27, 1961, felt different than in 1959. In the intervening years, she had performed at the Town Hall and recorded a hit record, At Newport, that included the single “Trouble in Mind”/“Cotton Eyed Joe” that rose through the Billboard Hot 100 R & B singles chart to number 11 and 92, respectively. She had also graced the pages of Ebony magazine; and had appeared on Hugh Hefner’s variety show, Playboy’s Penthouse; the Today show; and The Ed Sullivan Show.
She was a star whose energy radiated through the four hundred or so audience members who each night sat huddled around tables waiting, listening, and watching. Simone not only demanded attention; she commanded a room, captivating audiences with unexpected combinations of genres and her ability to surrender herself completely to the music. Her full-body performance expressed her intentions rather than her audience’s expectations. In the recording from those nights, her set moved from the romantic sound of the Midtown Manhattan Broadway stage, to foreboding Appalachian-influenced blue notes, to an unfurling sonic breakdown at a Southern church revival meeting. Within the Gate she built for herself a place that could gently hold her.
Nina at the Village Gate unfolded in layers: The performance’s moments of familiarity and predictability drew the audience close, while unexpected musical references kept it surprised and at a distance. Sitting near enough to feel Simone’s presence, the audience heard a bass line followed by her striking a soft minor chord on the piano; the sound entered the audience and the space. She sat at the piano and her band formed an arc around her. The musicians included long-time collaborator guitarist Al Schackman, bassist Chris White, and drummer Rob Hamilton. Together they formed an elegant quartet. “Just in Time” from Bells Are Ringing was followed by “He Was Too Good to Me,” a jazz standard with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart, written for the 1930 musical Simple Simon.
The sound moved from familiar romantic standards to a haunting guitar-backed rendition of Josh White’s version of “House of the Rising Sun.” Bob Dylan recorded the song months after Simone, and in 1964 it became a hit record for the Animals. The song is a cautionary tale about a brothel in New Orleans known for ruining many poor girls. Its speaker has hoped that her life will serve as a warning to her younger sister because, although the speaker’s fate is bound to unfold beneath the rising sun, her sister does not have to follow in her footsteps. Said to be inspired by English folk songs, the Appalachian artists Tom Ashley and Gwen Foster first recorded it in 1933. White released his version in 1942 while he was still involved with the Left.
Miriam Makeba recorded “House of the Rising Sun” in 1960. It is one of five songs in English on her eponymous fourteen-song album. Her rendition situated her as a part of the South African diaspora that drew musical inspiration from Africa as well as from the American folk music scene.
The influence of Black internationalism can also be heard on Simone’s Nina at the Village Gate through the inclusion of that song in the same set as the Black freedom song “Brown Baby”; the song “Zungo,” composed by Nigerian teacher, activist, and drummer Babatunde Olatunji; and the African American spiritual “Children Go Where I Send You.” Freedom songs have a musical tradition in the US and throughout the world: It’s a tradition connected to the spirituals that enslaved Africans sang in the US and that free African Americans, among them the Fisk Jubilee Singers, performed abroad in the nineteenth century. In the US and South Africa, freedom songs also drew on the tradition of work songs and incorporated call-and-response to engage listeners in the performance. Simone’s set at the Gate was itself steeped in that tradition, with folk music sitting alongside the gospel and spiritual songs she had heard in church during her youth, the classical music of her training, and the jazz standards she had perfected in nightclubs. The folk tradition, especially, connected her to international Black freedom movements that emphasized labor conditions as a key part of the struggle.
When Simone sang “Brown Baby,” she invited the example of the composer Oscar Brown Jr. into the room along with the calls for Black pride that always accompanied him. He had contributed to We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite. The audience may have also heard echoes of Mahalia Jackson’s gospel-inspired 1960 recording of the song. As with “House of the Rising Sun,” “Brown Baby” is performed for a future generation, in anticipation of brown children drinking “from the plenty cup.” The singer charges, “I want you to stand up tall and proud / And I want you to speak up clear and loud.” The song ends with a call to action. It expresses the desire for a future where the reward matches the contribution.
In the performance at the Gate, she sang not only to her live audience but also to those who would hear the recording in the future.
“Brown Baby” became a part of Simone’s repertoire. She sang it on October 21, 1960, at a concert that Art D’Lugoff produced for Hunter College. A review of the performance recalled, “At the end of the last group of songs, the audience rose to its feet and would not be satisfied until Miss Simone returned and performed once more for them. She chose for an encore ‘Brown Baby,’ a song which has the feeling and pathos of the Negro’s long struggle for a better life.” With the performance Simone had joined her friends Hansberry and Baldwin, who frequently engaged with and encouraged college students who were on the front lines of the civil rights movement. Through the encore at Hunter College, she spoke specifically to a new generation. In the performance at the Gate, she sang not only to her live audience but also to those who would hear the recording in the future.
“Brown Baby” anticipated the complicated emotional state expressed in Simone’s later recording of “I’m Feeling Good.” Her bluesy rendition of “Brown Baby” imagines the collective comfort of being together, but does so with her familiar haunting sound. When we hear the blues, we know there is no beauty without brutality. In “I’m Feeling Good” the upbeat horns counter the melancholy tone of her voice. In “Brown Baby,” the predominance of her singing with only piano accompaniment intensifies the juxtaposition of pain and promise. As much an acknowledgment of survival as a rallying cry, the song draws out sadness as well as satisfaction from the audience.
On Nina at the Village Gate, she transitions from “Brown Baby” to “Zungo,” a song composed and taught to her by Olatunji for the album. Like her friends Baldwin and Belafonte, he had cultivated a relationship with Martin Luther King Jr., which included visiting him in the South and later attending the March on Washington. In the performance at the Gate, Simone sang “Zungo is my home” in Yoruba, affirming the diasporic nature of her work as early as 1961.
To conclude her performance at the Gate, Simone transformed the nightclub into a Black church, and she returned to a familiar, sturdy foundation reminiscent of the crescendo of sound at the end of her live 1960 concert in Newport, Rhode Island. In the penultimate song at the Gate, “If He Changed My Name,” she offered a dirge of suffering and sacrifice in the service of self-transformation. “Jesus,” she sang, “told me I would go hungry if He changed my name / But I told Jesus it would be all right if He changed my name.” The lyrics point to an understanding that change requires sacrifice. In later years, she accelerated the tempo and intensity of the song in order to emphasize the cost of seeking and realizing a different political order. The potential danger of her political turn came into sharp relief when she gave dimensions to a sound that would envelop the audience. Because Simone’s exposure to global Black freedom movements through her collaboration with Olatunji and friendship with Makeba had brought worlds of possibility into view, she would be all right if the world ended up hating her, as it had Abbey Lincoln before her, for turning away from popular music toward freedom music.
Simone draws her audience further into the gospel tradition with “Children Go Where I Send You.” She asks, Have “you ever been to revival meeting?” Her band members reply slyly, “They don’t know nothing about that,” to which she replies, “I bet you don’t even know what I’m talking about,” as the bass line drives forward and the audience laughs. She clarifies, “Well, you in one right now.” In that moment, Simone has transformed the Gate into a stage of her own for making meaning. The audience came to a famous nightclub to hear a jazz star, but what she has conveyed is that when they arrived at 185 Thompson Street, they entered a sacred place of her divining. Her live performances blurred the lines between theater, church, and concert hall, creating a new artistic space where sound, dance, and oration meet in a constructive arrangement.
