Microsoft has never been shy about reorganizing itself. This time, the reshuffle may also be revealing who could someday sit in the corner office.
Charles Lamanna, who now leads Office and Teams, is seen as a potential successor to Satya Nadella as Microsoft’s next CEO, according to The Information.
A bigger desk, and a lot more on it
The latest expansion of Lamanna’s role followed a notable exit. On October 1, 2026, Ryan Roslansky announced he was leaving Microsoft after 18 years, stepping away from his post at LinkedIn.
In the shuffle that followed, Sumit Chauhan and Lan Ye now report to Lamanna. That puts other Microsoft 365 leaders under his umbrella while he keeps running his existing portfolio.
Lamanna was named Executive Vice President of Copilot, Agents, and Platform in March 2026. He oversees the AI assistant Microsoft wants threaded through nearly everything it sells, plus the tools businesses use to build on top of it.
As of early October 2026, Lamanna is viewed internally as a potential successor to Nadella because of that growing influence. The research also points to his proximity to Nadella and his hands-on role in shaping Microsoft’s AI strategy as reasons he has become such a central figure.
The Copilot company, and the Anthropic bet
Lamanna’s stated vision is to turn Microsoft into the “Copilot company,” positioning Copilot as the gateway to Microsoft’s services.
One of Lamanna’s more consequential calls has involved what powers that assistant. He has championed a multi-model approach for Copilot, meaning the product doesn’t have to rely on a single AI provider’s technology.
In practice, that has meant bringing Anthropic’s high-performance models into Copilot alongside OpenAI’s technology. Microsoft is set to pay Anthropic over $2 billion annually for access to those models. The research frames the move as responsive to customer needs and supportive of higher performance expectations for Copilot.
From acquired founder to executive vice president
Lamanna’s path to this point started outside Microsoft. He arrived in 2013 when Microsoft acquired his startup, MetricsHub.
From there, he worked his way through several parts of the company. His résumé includes roles tied to Azure infrastructure, and he went on to lead Power Platform and Dynamics 365 before his March 2026 promotion to EVP.
Senior executives reportedly see his technical depth and strategic sway over the AI roadmap as key reasons he is in the frame for succession.
What this means for Microsoft
Microsoft has not announced any CEO transition, and Nadella remains in charge. Being viewed as a potential successor is a reflection of internal standing, not a promotion with a start date.
The Anthropic relationship is worth watching. A payment set to top $2 billion annually reshapes how Microsoft balances its ties to multiple AI providers.
