Coach Sean Sweeney’s Orlando Magic welcomed Erik Spoelstra’s Miami Heat to the Kia Center in Orlando for a preseason game on a day when contracts were roundly discussed. An Anthony Black injury update was passed down before Sweeney and his staff watched star forward Franz Wagner come down with an injury of his own.
Clutch Points’ Brett Siegel reported on the situation as Wagner suffered from shoulder soreness.
“More injury news in the NBA, as Orlando says Franz Wagner is dealing with right shoulder soreness and will not return to tonight’s preseason matchup against Miami.”

The news came at a bad time for Sweeney’s team as Wagner scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds while dishing out six assists in 19 minutes of action against the Heat. The Magic led by 14 points late in the fourth quarter as they looked to close out Spoelstra’s team at home. Paolo Banchero and Desmond Bane led the Magic with a combined 47 points as they attempted to hold off their challengers from South Beach.
Nikola Vucevic, who returned to the Magic this offseason, got an eye-opening take from Bane before the game and continued on to score 13 points in 23 minutes of action on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. The Magic looked like a team rounding into form before their season opener on Wednesday, October 21 in Atlanta against the Hawks.
If Wagner is unable to play for an extended period of time, the team could be in big trouble as it continues to acclimate to life under Sweeney, the former Spurs assistant.
