City uncertainty threatens the Premier League’s integrity

Manchester City’s fate has become the most important unresolved issue in football. An independent commission found the club guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. City deny wrongdoing and have appealed. The sanctions remain undecided, leaving clubs, supporters and broadcasters wondering what the consequences could be for this season and beyond. No club should be denied the right to challenge a verdict. Equally, the Premier League cannot allow a case with such far-reaching implications to drift indefinitely. The competition’s credibility depends on a fair, transparent and timely process.

City remain unbeaten in the league and were excellent in their 3–0 victory at Liverpool. But what happens if their appeal fails? A fine, a points deduction or, in the most extreme circumstances, expulsion could have very different consequences. Nobody should pretend the outcome is settled, or that matches would automatically be wiped from the record.

Fans have paid substantial sums to watch the best players and clubs. Broadcasters, sponsors and rival teams have made plans around a competition whose final standings may be affected by a decision still to come. They deserve clarity as soon as due process allows.

No one should blame City’s supporters or the current players for the proceedings. The reported confrontation involving Gianluigi Donnarumma and supporters after the Liverpool match illustrates how easily tensions can spill over.

The club’s leadership must answer for the matters established by the commission, subject to the appeal. Meanwhile, football waits. And waits. The authorities must resolve this properly — and as quickly as fairness permits.

Henderson’s free-kick masterclass leaves Rogers smiling

Do you know who is said to be Chelsea’s fittest player? At 36, Jordan Henderson is reportedly setting the standard. He has also found a way to surprise opponents — and one of his own team-mates.

Morgan Rogers has described how Henderson and Cole Palmer practised a free-kick routine while he was away on England duty. Against Bournemouth, both men stood over the ball. All eyes were on Palmer. He shaped to strike, but Henderson stepped forward and curled the ball into the net.

It was textbook execution. Rogers may have been put out at first, but the quality of the finish was difficult to dispute. Chelsea’s 5–1 win showed how much Henderson can still contribute on the pitch.

He was recruited to set an example for a young squad whose discipline had too often let them down. His influence now extends beyond the dressing room and training ground. Xabi Alonso has every reason to value his experience. Chelsea travel to Everton on Saturday, where that composure may prove just as important.

Kerkez knows Liverpool have a long way to go

Milos Kerkez spent two years working under Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth before moving to Liverpool. That familiarity gives him an unusual insight into what the manager is trying to build — and why the Reds have not yet mastered it. “There is still a way to go and a way to improve but I think we are on the right track,” Kerkez said after the 3–0 defeat by Manchester City. “We were really disappointed after the City game … but results are what matters. We move on.” Kerkez believes he is more settled in his second season, but there is little time for the squad to absorb new ideas between matches. Injuries have made matters worse. Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo missed the City game, while Dominik Szoboszlai’s availability remains a question. Brentford away on Saturday is a genuine examination of Iraola’s tactical ability. Liverpool have looked vulnerable when possession breaks down, leaving too much space behind their attacking players. Can the manager protect his defence without sacrificing the chances his side must create?

Another defeat would increase the pressure. Kerkez is right that development takes time, but Liverpool are a club where results cannot wait.

Lampard’s Coventry are beginning to defy the doubters

Frank Lampard’s ability as a Chelsea player was never in doubt. His credentials as a Premier League manager, however, have been questioned often enough. Coventry’s 4–1 win over Newcastle gave him a timely answer.

Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Chérif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni were all on the scoresheet. It was a hugely encouraging result for a promoted side that many had expected to struggle.

Lampard used a 4-2-3-1 formation, with attackers staying high and wide rather than crowding midfield. Newcastle had plenty of possession — the original match notes put it at 67 per cent — but Coventry were ready to break whenever they won the ball.        Chérif’s pace unsettled the visitors and Coventry were clinical in front of goal. It was a reminder that a team does not need to dominate the ball to control the danger it poses.

Coventry visit Tottenham on Monday night. Both sides need the points, but Lampard’s men will travel with fresh belief.

Carrick embraces the pressure as United struggle

Michael Carrick says he loves the pressure of managing Manchester United. That is just as well: at Old Trafford, there is rarely any shortage of it.

Carrick has warned his players that anyone unwilling to accept the demands of the club may be in the wrong place. “I love this part, sometimes when things are not going quite right and you get to see who really wants to be here for the long term,” he said.   He has defended captain Bruno Fernandes, saying fitness has affected his season. United’s midfield has lacked the understanding that Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo once provided. Mainoo and Youri Tielemans have struggled to impose themselves with sufficient speed and authority.

With Amad Diallo available and Bryan Mbeumo playing centrally, supporters hoped for greater attacking threat. Yet against Tottenham, United were slow to create danger inside the penalty area. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens also nearly gifted Dominic Solanke an early opening with a loose pass.

Carlos Baleba’s brief appearance offered a glimpse of what he might bring, although it is too early to declare him a solution. The midweek Champions League defeat at Atlético Madrid will only add to Carrick’s concerns.

United travel to Leeds on Sunday. It is exactly the sort of occasion on which Carrick needs his players to show they relish the pressure as much as he does.

Jaissle needs a tougher, tighter Newcastle

Two successive 4–1 defeats have put Newcastle under pressure. Matthias Jaissle’s side cannot keep giving opponents so much room and expect to climb the table.

Newcastle created chances at Coventry and enjoyed long spells on the ball, but their defending was too open. I noted 19 shots and several clear opportunities but the Magpies were punished by a team prepared to attack the spaces they left behind.

Jaissle prefers a 4-2-3-1 to the 4-3-3 associated with previous manager Eddie Howe. He wants high-intensity pressing and quick, vertical attacks, but those ambitions require a stronger structure when possession is lost.

Matías Fernández-Pardo and Yoane Wissa offer movement, while Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes have qualities of their own. Yet Newcastle need more physical presence in key areas. The excellent Lewis Hall cannot be expected to cover every gap on the left.

“We’re frustrated. It’s a feeling you don’t want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should have won,” Jaissle reportedly said.

Aston Villa visit St James’ Park on Saturday. Can Newcastle press more aggressively without leaving themselves exposed again? That is the challenge for Jaissle — and for his players.

Spurs show their pace — and their passion

Tottenham’s meeting with Manchester United produced a glimpse of the speed Roberto De Zerbi wants in his side. Sandro Tonali reportedly reached 34.2km/h before Omar Marmoush clocked 35.1km/h after coming on. But raw speed was only part of the story.

Tonali appears to have developed an immediate understanding with his fellow Italian De Zerbi. When Dominic Solanke scored, Tonali ran to embrace the manager — a small moment that said plenty about the spirit in the camp.

The real test is turning that energy into consistent performances. Coventry arrive on Monday night with confidence after their victory over Newcastle, and Spurs will need more than an impressive sprint to get the better of them.

Hull supporters have plenty to sing about

At the start of the season, former Chelsea winger Joe Cole questioned whether Hull City were good enough for the Premier League. The Tigers have taken pleasure in proving their critics wrong.

After Hull’s draw with Everton, supporters sang, “Are you watching, Joe Cole?” That is one reason I try not to make predictions. Football fans have a wonderful habit of making you eat your words.

Hull came up through the Championship play-offs rather than by automatic promotion. Since Turkish media entrepreneur Acun Ilicali bought the club in 2022, they have seldom done things by halves.

Before the Everton game, Turkish opera singer Murat Karahan performed the supporters’ anthem, Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Everton’s fans tried to compete, but the tenor, the home crowd and the stadium sound system were difficult to drown out.

The Tigers travel to Fulham on Saturday. Whatever the result, Hull have already given their supporters something worth singing about.
