J.J. McCarthy seemingly throws shot at Vikings coaching staff ahead of first Giants start originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
When the Minnesota Vikings selected J.J. McCarthy in the first round a couple of years ago, the organization seemed to expect him to be a guy they could count on for a long time.
Unfortunately for the Vikings and McCarthy, things didn't work out at the level that either of them were hoping for.
That is part of the NFL, at the end of the day, as we see guys drafted in the first round not work out every single year.
However, it also felt like McCarthy and head coach Kevin O'Connell didn't necessarily have the best relationship.
Whether that was the case is unclear: some reports say it was, while others say it wasn't, but McCarthy's latest comments about his time with the New York Giants now seem like a shot at Minnesota.
He said he feels confident he can improve after his first stint as a starter in Minnesota, adding that he's more confident than he was the first time around.
McCarthy seemingly loves everybody and specifically called out the coaching staff, which could be viewed as somewhat of a shot at O'Connell and others in Minnesota.
“Just being around great talent and great coaches is great,” McCarthy said, per SI.
“I absolutely love everyone on the offensive side of the ball, and the defensive side of the ball does a tremendous job of just giving us opportunities and always making sure we stay in the game and fight to the last seconds of each game.”
McCarthy has a very good chance to revive his career in a sense.
If he can step in and do what's needed on the offensive side of things, giving the Giants a chance to win games through the rest of the year, he'll have a strong chance to play elsewhere next season and possibly even start.
The Giants likely won't make him a full-time starter anytime soon, with the expectation that Jaxson Dart will make a full recovery at some point.
