THE Sungai Pinang flood mitigation project in Jelutong, Penang, is expected to be completed by September 2027, with physical progress reaching 50.86% as of September this year.
Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) Deputy Minister Datuk Sri Abdul Rahman Mohamad, in a written reply to Jelutong MP Sanisvara Nethaji Rayer in the Dewan Rakyat today, said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) was implementing Phase One of the Sungai Pinang River Basin Flood Mitigation Plan to reduce flood risks in Jelutong and surrounding areas.
The project includes widening and deepening Sungai Pinang, constructing drains and weir structures, upgrading drainage outfalls, building bridges and a pump house, as well as land acquisition.
Upon completion, the project is expected to increase the river's flow capacity and improve the existing drainage system, helping to reduce flood risks in the affected areas.
Pending completion, PETRA and JPS are also carrying out short-term mitigation works under the River Conservation Project to Reduce Flood Risks. These include river dredging, bank stabilisation and upgrading drainage channels and related structures.
Penang has been allocated RM8 million for the programme in 2026, of which RM450,000 has been approved for works in Jelutong. These works are expected to be completed by December 2026.
The ministry said the government would continue monitoring the main project's implementation and carry out appropriate interim mitigation measures to reduce flood risks while construction was ongoing. - October 19, 2026
