Coach Shane Steichen’s Indianapolis Colts are 2-4 on the season heading into Week 7, a rough start that led to the firing of GM Chris Ballard. An injury update to Alec Pierce also dropped as the Colts’ passing game, and starting QB situation, came into focus.
Colts writer James Boyd of The Athletic shared a new update on the Daniel Jones vs. Anthony Richardson race, which included Steichen’s choice heading into a game against the Vikings in Minneapolis.
“Colts HC Shane Steichen says QB Daniel Jones will remain the team’s starter against the Vikings,” Boyd wrote. “DC Lou Anarumo will continue to call the defense as well.”

Jones has worked to become a better passer but hasn’t been the most proficient QB by a long shot in 2026. He has over 1,200 yards passing but has also thrown six interceptions against four touchdown passes. His rushing yards average has dropped in each of the last five seasons, from 5.0 yards per carry in 2022 to 3.2 in 2026.
Anthony Richardson, the Colts’ former first round pick, has yet to play this season, a surprising development considering his immense football gifts.
Jones admitted he is hurting his team with turnovers and must do a better job in Week 7 against the Vikings, one of the NFL’s toughest defenses. Now in his eighth NFL season, Jones is starting to skate on thin ice as a quarterback whose best skills aren’t quite what they used to be and a player who hasn’t been able to shore up his glaring deficiencies as a thrower and caretaker of the football.
The Colts need a win as badly as any team in the NFL, and Week 7 looks like a low probability-win game against Kyler Murray and the Vikings. If Jones doesn’t pull a rabbit out of his hat on the road against one of the league’s best defenses, Steichen may have no choice but to turn to Richardson by the time Week 8 rolls around.
