GEORGE TOWN: Unfinished slope stabilisation works were affected by the fatal landslide in Paya Terubong, which claimed the life of a doctor.
State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said stabilisation works were ongoing at the site, but a section remained incomplete when the landslide occurred at Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, this morning.
"Unfortunately, it was the section that had not been completed that suffered the landslide.
"Investigations are being carried out before more detailed information can be provided," he said.
He said the priority was to ensure the safety of residents near the slope while investigations into the cause continued.
The landslide claimed the life of Dr Wong Kar Lin, 73, who was found trapped after the incident damaged his house.
The victim's body was retrieved by Fire and Rescue Department personnel at 11.21am.
Meanwhile, Bukit Gelugor member of parliament Ramkarpal Singh advised residents living near the slope to evacuate temporarily for at least one or two days until conditions were deemed safe.
He said the precautionary measure was necessary as rain continued and the stability of the slope remained uncertain.
