By Zoila Palma: Hurricane Vance became the 11th major hurricane of the 2026 central and eastern Pacific hurricane season on Friday, as meteorologists monitored its movement toward Mexico’s west-central coast.
According to AccuWeather, the storm briefly reached Category 3 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour. Forecasters are tracking multiple possible scenarios, including one in which the hurricane remains offshore and another in which it turns toward the Mexican coast.
Vance developed after an area of disturbed weather strengthened into a tropical depression on Wednesday before becoming a tropical storm four hours later. It intensified into a hurricane early Friday, with sustained winds reaching 90 miles per hour by 9 a.m. Friday.
AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said the storm could remain over open waters but warned that a northeast turn toward Mexico’s west-central coast could result in more dangerous conditions.
