President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday emphasized the need to realize the full potential of Pakistan-Germany relations by expanding political, economic and defence cooperation, with a focus on trade, emerging technologies, climate resilience, skills development, and cultural exchanges.
During a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President Zardari thanked him for the invitation and warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.
He said the visit reflected Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding friendly relations with Germany and transforming them into a robust, mutually beneficial partnership through sustained engagement.
President Zardari noted that the visit was taking place after 23 years, marking a significant milestone as Pakistan and Germany celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year.
He described Germany as a major European partner and appreciated its support for women’s empowerment, social protection and human development. He emphasized expanding cooperation in science, healthcare, education, vocational training, technology, trade, investment, agriculture, commerce, industry and climate resilience through government, business and expert-level exchanges.
President Zardari also thanked Germany for acknowledging Pakistan’s sincere mediation efforts in the US-Iran conflict. He stressed that sustained dialogue and constructive negotiations were essential for ensuring regional and global peace and stability.
President Steinmeier warmly welcomed Zardari’s visit and offered condolences over the recent deaths of children in a school roof collapse in Peshawar. He expressed hope that both countries would strengthen business, trade, educational collaboration and technological cooperation.
The German president praised Pakistan’s growing diplomatic role in resolving regional and international disputes. He also appreciated Pakistan’s assistance in facilitating the verification of 500 Afghans scheduled for repatriation to Germany, as well as its humanitarian support for millions of Afghans over more than four decades.
During discussions on Afghanistan, President Zardari clarified that Pakistan had no conflict with the Afghan people but would not allow terrorists to use Afghan territory to attack Pakistani citizens or violate the country’s sovereignty.
Responding to Steinmeier’s interest, Zardari said the Makkah Defence Pact aimed to promote regional security and provide an alternative to conflict, rather than target any particular country.
President Zardari also invited Steinmeier to visit Pakistan. The German president said he would consider the invitation and seek an appropriate time.
Following their one-on-one meeting, both presidents held delegation-level talks. The Pakistani delegation included Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, provincial ministers Sharjeel Memon and Jam Khan Shoro, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Germany Salman Sharif.
Earlier, President Zardari received a Guard of Honour at Germany’s Ministry of Defence, attended by President Steinmeier.
