Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Baghdad on Saturday to discuss efforts to reduce regional tensions, restore stability, and pursue diplomatic solutions to the ongoing crisis.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, hosted by Iraq. According to an Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement, the two top diplomats reviewed recent regional developments and discussed ways to reach an agreement that could contain the crisis and prevent the conflict from spreading.
Abdelatty stressed the urgent need to reduce tensions and restore calm across the Middle East, warning of the wider consequences of continued instability. He warned that the regional crisis had caused serious disruptions to global supply chains, particularly those involving energy and fertilizers.
The Egyptian minister said protecting international shipping routes was essential to limiting the economic consequences of the crisis and safeguarding global trade. Egypt has repeatedly called for diplomatic efforts to restore stability and prevent further disruptions to shipping routes that are vital to the regional and global economy.
Abdelatty also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the security and stability of Gulf countries and other states across the region. He strongly condemned attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and called for an immediate end to hostilities threatening the Kingdom.
The OIC ministerial meeting, scheduled for October 17-18, brings together representatives of member states to discuss regional developments and cooperation on matters affecting the Islamic world.
