Google is expanding Gemini's assistance behind the wheel by bringing Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in.
Drivers can now interact with a far more contextual assistant capable of combining Android Auto functions with information found across their Google ecosystem. In a bid to have in-car voice assistants be less single-dimensional and more functional during everyday commutes, Gemini can draw from users' schedules and information from Workspace, Google Calendar, Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Maps to answer complex, multi-part user prompts. The point of this is to save users' time (and lives) from navigating through their phones to obtain the same information.
For instance, a driver heading out for a morning trip can simply say, "Take me to my doctor's appointment," and Gemini will surface the correct address from a calendar invite, calculate the route, and launch step-by-step navigation. Similarly, users on their way to catch a flight can ask Gemini for their gate number and current flight status in a single spoken request, eliminating the need to pull over or parse through confirmation emails on their own smartphone.
Here's another one: A driver looking to revisit a location captured in a previous photograph can ask Gemini to find the car wash from a picture taken the previous week and generate driving directions straight to it. For dining recommendations, Google says that Gemini can cross-reference dietary preferences stored in user profile settings or saved maps to curate personalized restaurant suggestions along an active route.
Of course, Google also is emphasizing user privacy and security as a core component of the rollout. For one, using Personal Intelligence is completely optional, meaning Gemini will not access personal app data or emails until a user grants permission through their settings. In vehicles equipped with Android Automotive OS (AAOS), personal responses are only displayed or read aloud when the driver's smartphone is actively connected to the car. If a user chooses to keep Personal Intelligence turned off, the standard in-car Gemini voice controls remain fully functional for basic tasks minus personalized contextual data.
This rollout begins immediately for Android Auto users globally, with expansion to AAOS vehicles planned over the coming months. Google says that that PI is open to eligible Google account holders (except those located in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK, and Nigeria), although there is no mention of if or when enterprise, education, and business accounts will be included.
