Trent Alexander-Arnold return talk grows as Liverpool watch Real Madrid situation
Liverpool are once again being linked with Trent Alexander-Arnold, and this latest twist has all the makings of a saga that will run and run. According to TeamTalk, the former Reds full-back is “considering his future at Real Madrid after growing frustrated with his lack of playing time”, with Liverpool listed among the clubs keeping a close eye on developments.
That line alone is enough to get the conversation going on Merseyside. Alexander-Arnold left for Madrid in 2025, and plenty of supporters have not forgotten the manner of that departure. Yet football has a habit of dragging old stories back into the light, especially when a gifted player is stuck on the fringes at one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Real Madrid frustration puts spotlight on future
The most striking detail in the report is what happened against Sevilla. “Despite the England international being available, Real Madrid opted to use Federico Valverde at right-back,” a decision that naturally sharpened focus on where Alexander-Arnold stands. For a player of his profile, being overlooked in favour of a midfielder playing out of position is never a small detail.
It adds to a bleak run of numbers. TeamTalk report that “The 28-year-old has struggled to establish himself since arriving at the Bernabeu, having made just 14 starts last season and only three so far this campaign.” There is also the reminder that he “was also substituted after 52 minutes against Villarreal, in another frustrating moment for the former Liverpool star.”
For any elite player, rhythm matters. Confidence matters. Feeling trusted matters. Right now, the picture painted is of a footballer stuck in limbo, “happy in Madrid” but increasingly irritated by the lack of chances to show his worth.
Liverpool links raise familiar questions
Liverpool’s place in this story is obvious enough. TeamTalk say, “The Reds have not sufficiently replaced the right-back since his departure, and a potential return would offer an opportunity to address a position that has remained a talking point.” That is the football case in a nutshell.
There is logic there. Alexander-Arnold can still shape a game with his passing range, his vision and his delivery from deep. He remains capable of influencing matches in a way few right-backs can. If there is even a flicker of availability, Liverpool would be daft not to assess it properly.
Yet any deal would be complicated. TeamTalk note that “His salary could prove a significant complication for any potential move, given the financial terms agreed when he joined Real Madrid in 2025.” That is before emotion, history and dressing-room balance even enter the discussion.
Transfer stance could depend on opportunity
The report adds that “Real Madrid are not actively looking to force Alexander-Arnold out,” though they “would consider a reasonable offer in the future should his situation fail to improve.” That sounds like a club keeping its options open, and it leaves the door ajar for suitors.
For now, “his immediate priority is to fight for a regular place in the side.” Fair enough. Players of his quality do not give up lightly. But if the minutes do not come, this noise around a Liverpool return will only grow louder.
Our View
Well, here we are. A year or so down the line and suddenly Madrid might not be all sunshine, swagger and spotless white shirts after all. Funny old game. The grass always looks greener until you are watching someone else play your position.
If this is true, there will be plenty on Merseyside trying not to smirk. Liverpool were told, in effect, that the bright lights called louder. Now the same player is staring at a team sheet and finding Federico Valverde in his lane. You could not script it better.
That said, football has never been a monastery. Sentiment matters, but quality matters more. If Liverpool genuinely believe Trent Alexander-Arnold improves the side, then the only serious question is whether the numbers stack up and whether the dressing room would embrace it. The rest is noise from people who enjoy performing outrage on demand.
There would be grumbles, of course. Some would call it a step too far. Some would mutter about loyalty and badges and all the old hymns. Then the first whipped pass into the box lands on a sixpence, a forward buries it, and half the moral panic melts into applause.
That is football. It remembers everything and forgives more than it admits. If he comes back, he comes back to prove a point. If he stays in Madrid, Liverpool move on. Either way, there is a certain comedy in seeing a grand escape plan turn into a battle for minutes.
