The Chicago Bears are making it increasingly difficult to dismiss them as an entertaining upstart. Right now, this team is beginning to look like a legitimate threat in the NFC. Thursday night’s 30-24 victory over the New England Patriots was not a flawless performance. Still, it was another compelling example of the Bears finding answers when the pressure intensified. Caleb Williams delivered a statement performance. The supporting cast produced explosive plays. Cairo Santos supplied a clutch finish. At 5-2, Chicago has earned more than compliments for its improvement. It deserves to enter the Super Bowl conversation.
Difference-maker
The biggest reason for optimism is Williams. He continues to show signs of becoming the franchise quarterback Chicago has long needed. Against New England, he completed 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. His 119.3 passer rating reflected a poised performance.
Williams was particularly effective attacking downfield. He punished coverage mistakes instead of allowing New England to dictate the terms of the game. His ability to locate open receivers and deliver accurate throws helped Chicago generate chunk plays. Just as importantly, he protected the football well.

Of course, Williams still has room to improve, especially in sustaining that level of execution against defenses capable of disguising coverages and applying consistent pressure. That said, performances like Thursday’s offer tangible evidence that his development is translating into winning football.
Offensive arsenal
Williams is not carrying this team alone. Chicago’s most encouraging development is the variety of ways it can hurt opposing defenses. This has made the offense far more difficult to contain than a unit dependent on one featured receiver.
Luther Burden III was the headline performer against New England. He turned four receptions into 130 yards and a touchdown. His explosive scoring play on third-and-17 demonstrated how quickly Chicago can punish a defensive mistake.
Colston Loveland adds another dimension. His touchdown threat from the tight end position gives Williams a target capable of exploiting space. Meanwhile, Rome Odunze can stretch coverage on the perimeter. In addition, D’Andre Swift supplies a credible ground threat and a receiving option out of the backfield. Chicago can lean on its passing game in a shootout or use Swift to help manage the clock when protecting a lead.
Head coach Ben Johnson deserves credit for building an offense that can create mismatches. The Bears still need greater week-to-week consistency, but the ingredients for a dangerous postseason attack are clearly taking shape.
Finishing close games
Super Bowl contenders must execute when games become tense, possessions become precious, and one mistake can determine the outcome. Chicago demonstrated that composure against New England. The Patriots kept fighting behind Drake Maye, who threw for 321 yards. Yet the Bears made the decisive late-game plays. Santos drilled a career-long, 58-yard field goal to extend the advantage to nine points with 1:34 remaining. New England eventually pulled within six, but Chicago recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure the victory.
That finish was significant because it showed Chicago could withstand a late push without allowing the game to slip away. Santos delivered under pressure, while the team handled the final moments well enough to preserve the result.
Now, there are surely still concerns. The Bears allowed 24 points, surrendered several explosive plays, and needed a late special-teams contribution to create breathing room. Better opponents will test those defensive vulnerabilities more severely. Still, winning close games is a skill. The Bears are gaining valuable experience in exactly those situations.
Entering the conversation
Nobody should hand Chicago a Lombardi Trophy in October — far from it. As things stand, the NFC remains crowded at the top. Also, the Bears have not yet demonstrated that they can sustain their best football over an entire season.
Despite that, their trajectory is difficult to ignore. Williams is playing with growing confidence. Johnson has assembled a versatile offense. Chicago is showing an ability to deliver in decisive moments. Those are foundational qualities for a serious contender.
The next challenge is consistency. The Bears must prove that Thursday night’s performance was not an isolated peak. If they can do that, they will have a legitimate chance to compete with the conference’s best. Right now, Chicago has already earned the right to be taken seriously. The Bears making a case that their Super Bowl window may be opening sooner than anyone expected.
