Canadian tuxedos, also known as a denim-on-denim look, can be tough to pull off. Somehow, though, Julia Fox has done it without breaking a sweat, gracing the red carpet at the “Club Kid” during the 38th Annual New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival on Oct. 23 in New York. The festival spotlights queer film and art.
Canadian tuxes often rely on matching washes, say a dark-wash top with matching dark-wash bottoms. This is so that both denim pieces look seamless when partnered together. The “Uncut Gems” actress‘ ensemble lived in the dark wash realm, featuring a long-sleeve collared jacket equipped with corset-esque black lace-up accents and a zipper closer down the front. Each piece appeared to be from Dilara Findikoglu, one of Fox’s go-to designers.
The fitted outerwear-esque top was paired with mid-rise jeans featuring metal button closures throughout from the waist down the pant legs. These button closures were left open towards the hem to create somewhat of a capri look. Denim on denim looks have gone through many changes over the years, altering with the fashion zeitgeist. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears famously wore double denim looks while in attendance at the 2001 American Music Awards.
These couple outfits are still just as popular as the day the pair wore them, replicated by couples for Halloween and beyond. The pair opted for a light-wash denim look, complete with coordinating cowboy hats and chokers. Elvis Presley was also one to wear a denim-on-denim look in his time. Early rock-and-roll double denim was common, usually featuring some sort of distressed indigo jeans and a chambray work shirt. Rihanna has also famously worn double denim throughout her time in the spotlight, opting for a street style-inspired vibe.
Accessorizing her double-denim ensemble, Fox opted for an archival piece hailing from Dior. The “Le Victim” Street Chic Columbus shoulder bag hails from the mind of John Galliano, a designer whose time at the house was highly impactful. Currently, this bag is available on resale designer sites like The RealReal, available for $995 and up. The designer handbag is a patchwork style with silver hardware that reads the French house’s name.
The bag also features spiked accents and a pouch affixed to the side. John Galliano prominently designed this style of patchwork bag, inspired by boho-chic, Y2K street culture, and eclectic vintage collecting. The bags are a marriage of a slew of aesthetics, evident in the patchwork design. Beyond her vintage bag, Fox also wore burgundy leather pumps with silver star hardware, also from Dior. The shoes are also vintage and were also created by John Galliano.
