I sleep hot; my partner, conversely, sleeps cold. It’s the perennial battle waged in countless New York bedrooms, and typically, most bedding forces someone to pick a losing side.
For New York Post’s Made It Here Awards for the best sheets, I sacrificed my own slumber, spending 126 nights testing nine sets of cooling white queen sheet sets — linen, cotton percale and bamboo — across the sweltering summer and the fickle fall.
Every contender endured 14 nights on the mattress, intentionally broken into two distinct seven-night stints. Then, every set went through the brutal reality of five washes and five dryer cycles at our less-than-delicate neighborhood laundromat.
Our bedroom offers no central air, no peace, no mercy. We rely on a single window unit and an oscillating fan or a hissing radiator once the building’s heat finally kicks on.
Yet, one set managed the impossible: it kept a hot sleeper cool, and it kept a cold sleeper cozy beneath the very same comforter. Surprisingly, it also happened to be the absolute cheapest linen option in the entire lineup, beating out Cultiver and Sijo.
The Quince European Linen Sheet Set softened noticeably after just one spin in the wash, never once left me stewing in my own sweat, and asks only $144 for a queen set that includes the flat sheet, which is not a guarantee these days.

Crafted from 100% European flax, Quince’s European Linen Sheet Set arrives prewashed and garment-washed, featuring a fitted sheet expertly rated for mattresses up to 16 inches deep.
What does that mean exactly? When linen bedding is both pre-washed at the fabric level and garment-washed as a finished set, it eliminates the stiff, scratchy break-in period of raw flax while ensuring sheets actually fit your bed long-term.
Pre-washing the raw fabric blocks the material’s massive natural tendency to shrink, stabilizing the fibers before they are even cut. Following that up with a specialized garment wash after assembly relaxes every single seam, hem and stitch line, unlocking linen’s signature airy drape, pillowy loft and velvety, broken-in softness right out of the box.
Whether you want it with or without a flat sheet, it comes in seven sizes ranging from Twin to Split King and proudly holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification.
Material: 100% European flax linen, prewashed and garment-washed | Weight: 150 GSM | Pocket depth: 16 inches | Flat sheet: 96 by 106 in. Why is the Quince European Linen Sheet Set the best sheet set?
New York sheets work a punishing, perpetual shift. They must survive a window-unit summer, endure a radiator winter, stay together through the neighborhood laundromat and somehow keep two people with radically different internal thermostats from fighting over the comforter.
Quince conquered all three criteria, and it did so for less cash than any other linen I tested.
How do they feel out of the package?
The Quince sheets start out ever so slightly stiff. That’s just the nature of linen. Because Quince prewashes the fabric, it arrives with a genuinely lived-in look on day one; it isn’t crisp like percale and it isn’t slick like bamboo.
Fortunately, a single wash fixed most of that initial stiffness. It grew noticeably softer after its first laundromat run, then continued to improve in smaller, subtle increments until, by wash five, it had transformed into soft, relaxed, beautifully textured linen.
If you demand linen that feels butter-soft from night one, Cultiver is probably your answer – though that luxury will cost you an additional $336.
Do they actually sleep cool?
Yes, the cooling is completely real. I didn’t wake up sweaty a single time over 14 nights.
This marked a monumental upgrade from the microfiber and even the cool-to-the-touch bamboo viscose sheets I’ve slept on, without major complaint, in the past.
However, the true test was the other side of the mattress. My partner, who perpetually sleeps cold, remained entirely comfortable beneath it while utilizing the same four-season comforter. Ultimately, linen was the one fabric where we both found harmony. The heat doesn’t break the linen; the linen breaks the heat.
I couldn’t say the same for every material I evaluated, as every bamboo set subjected me to at least one damp or deeply sweaty night, whereas linen never faltered once.
How do they hold up in the wash?
Every set faced the exact same, unforgiving laundromat gauntlet: cold water, a 30-minute low dry, standard Tide and wool dryer balls, no fabric softener and no dryer sheets.
Quince’s care label calls for a cold, gentle wash with a low tumble or line dry, so our method stuck closely to the rules… mostly. (Gentle at a laundromat is like saying a cab during midtown rush hour traffic is a smooth ride.)
The inevitable catch, however, is fuzz. You should absolutely expect a thick layer of lint in the dryer trap during those first few washes; it fades fast, but it is undeniably real. Aside from that, no noticeable pilling or loose threads after all five washings.
How do they fit?
Boasting elastic all the way around, the fitted sheet is rated for depths up to 16 inches, and it gripped my 12-inch mattress without popping off even once.
The relaxed look of linen also made bed-making quick and easy. More like fluffing a pillow than 45-degree mitered hospital corners. Who has time for that?
The queen flat sheet measures a generous 96 by 106 inches (measurably larger than Sijo’s 92 by 104), leaving plenty of fabric to tuck in. I kicked my feet out anyway, because I always do.
Whatever you do, don’t iron it. I never iron sheets, and linen flatly refuses to need it; simply pull it from the dryer fast, let it wrinkle naturally, and call it an aesthetic.
How does it compare to similar products?
During my gauntlet, Quince squared off against two other linens – Cultiver and Sijo. – alongside three percale sets and three bamboo sets.
Cultiver ($295) represents GOTS-certified organic French linen, making it the lone certified organic linen I tested, yet neither of its competitors managed to sleep any cooler than Quince.
If the distinct, grainy texture of linen simply isn’t for you, the other fabrics boast their own rightful champions. Boll & Branch crafts a crisp, organic percale that felt incredibly soft from night one for $279, while Cozy Earth spins a silky bamboo for $308, even though the latter did inflict a couple of sweaty nights.
Ultimately, Quince took the crown because it slept just as cool as anything I encountered, kept my cold-sleeping partner blissfully happy and, maybe the most important for some readers, commands the lowest price.
How much does it cost?
The queen set, complete with a flat sheet, costs $144 directly from Quince, though you can also buy it without the flat sheet.
Quince brazenly displays a $259 “traditional retail” price right next to it, which is merely Quince’s own marketing comparison rather than a genuine competitor’s tag. However, after months of researching linen bedding, I’d argue the traditional retail price is even higher.
The real math is much more compelling: it costs $135 less than Boll & Branch, $151 less than Sijo, $164 less than Cozy Earth and a staggering $336 less than Cultiver. Furthermore, Quince gifts customers with 365-day returns and free standard shipping.
Is it worth it?
Yes, it absolutely is.
Not only is it the coolest-sleeping sheets set I evaluated, but it also carries the lowest price tag of any linen in the field, serving as the singular set that both sides of my notoriously divided bed could actually agree upon.
It isn’t for everyone, though. If the tactile, fibrous grain of linen intrinsically bothers you, no bargain will suddenly transform this into your dream sheet. In that case, seek out Boll & Branch for crisp cotton or Cozy Earth for silky bamboo. Both are winners of their own respective categories.
But Quince survived a brutal window-unit summer, five relentless laundromat cycles and a notoriously cold sleeper’s veto. So, if you’re only buying one set of sheets this year, make it the $144 linen from Quince.
How did we test it?
I slept on nine white queen sheet sets for a grueling 126 nights. They transitioned from the dregs of summer into the chill of fall and featured three key fabric choices known for their airy, cooling properties: linen, cotton percale, and bamboo.
Each individual set endured 14 nights, intentionally split into two 7-night stints, ensuring that no single set absorbed all the brutal heat waves or all the forgiving cool nights.
Every set graced the exact same stage: a 12-inch queen mattress protected by a breathable, non-waterproof cover, topped with the identical four-season comforter, with the flat sheet deployed every single night.
I aggressively aimed for a baseline of 68 degrees using a window AC unit, an oscillating fan, and, once the building dictated it, the hissing radiator. My partner, a documented cold sleeper, shared the mattress.
Every set was subjected to five washes and five dryer cycles at a local laundromat: cold water, a 30-minute low dry, Tide Original liquid and dryer balls. No fabric softener, no dryer sheets. Escaping a rigid numeric scoring system, I judged every set on four strictly weighted criteria.
Testing criteria
- Cooling: Can it successfully guide a hot sleeper through an unforgiving window-unit August without a sweaty wake-up? Furthermore, is the cold sleeper stationed on the other side remaining comfortable?
- Wash and wear: How effectively does it emerge from five laundromat washes and five demanding dryer cycles? Are there any visible signs of pilling, lint, fading, loose threads or stretched-out elastic?
- Feel and fit: How does the fabric feel on night one juxtaposed against night 14? Does the fitted sheet stubbornly hold onto a 12-inch mattress? How presentable does the bed look by day three?
- Value: Does its performance across the other three metrics justify the gaping price gap between it and competing sets?
