The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to scientists Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their 'discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics'. Their discovery enabled scientists to use light to control the activity of specific brain cells, transforming research into how the brain works and how neurological disorders may be treated.
