The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (Frsc), Shehu Mohammed, has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the tanker crash and inferno beneath Otedola Bridge along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway.
He warned that reckless driving, particularly by heavy duty vehicle operators transporting petroleum products, poses an unacceptable threat to human lives and public infrastructure.
The crash, which occurred on Monday involved a diesel laden tanker that plunged into the underpass beneath Otedola Bridge on the outward section of the expressway, triggering a raging inferno.
A statement signed by Osondu Ohaeri on Tuesday in Abuja noted that two adult male occupants sustained injuries and were evacuated to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for medical attention.
According to a report submitted to the Corps Marshal by the Lagos Sector Command, preliminary findings identified excessive speed as the cause of the crash.
Mohammed emphasised that the transportation of petroleum products requires exceptional discipline, professional competence, and strict adherence to safety standards.
He warned that speeding, dangerous manoeuvres, poor vehicle maintenance, and disregard for prescribed safety requirements could turn an ordinary journey into a disaster with devastating consequences.
He also cautioned tanker owners and fleet operators against prioritising commercial interests over human safety, noting that unrealistic delivery schedules, inadequate driver supervision, and poor maintenance practices must never expose Nigerians to preventable danger.
To forestall similar incidents, the Corps Marshal called for stronger driver training, effective monitoring of driving behaviour, regular vehicle inspections, and strict compliance with speed limits and other applicable safety regulations.
He commended the emergency responders for their coordinated intervention and urged motorists to exercise extreme caution around emergency scenes.
