ⓘ Unknown worlds
Unknown Worlds is calling the next patch Early Access 2.0. This could effectively mean that the game is getting a sequel to its early access phase before a full release.
Unknown Worlds has begun the slow march toward what it calls Early Access 2.0, and creative director Anthony Gallegos is not underselling it. In the first entry of a new developer vlog series, he described the patch as the "most substantial update we've done since release". The centerpiece is a completely new playable region made up of five biomes, which Gallegos called "one of our scariest regions we've ever done". He described it as dark, threatening, and beautiful at the same time. The news arrived in a new vlog series, with more details promised in the coming months.
The region comes with a story expansion covering both the human colonists and the game's "other beings," plus a batch of new creatures. The Collector Leviathan is also getting new behavior, with Unknown Worlds promising it will be scarier than ever. The Collector is an octopus-like Leviathan, and the update is meant to make its encounters feel less predictable. Specific details on that behavior are being saved for future deep dives, because of course they are.
A frog mech, a dash fix, and a round room
The gameplay additions are substantial. The Tadpole submersible is getting a Frog chassis, which gives the small vehicle arms and legs and turns it into something closer to a pilotable mech. Players who have been digging through game files already knew about it, but now it is official. The update also adds new biomods and a new round room for base building, a feature veterans have been requesting for a while.
The best quality-of-life change is the dash. Previously, dashing underwater required equipping a biomod, which meant sacrificing a slot that could go toward something more useful. After Early Access 2.0, players wearing fins can dash with a button press, no biomod required. It is a small tweak that should make navigation considerably less annoying.
Players want a finish line, not another phase
Most of the response has been positive, especially around the round room and the Frog chassis. But the announcement has also renewed a familiar complaint: the game has no release date, and "Early Access 2.0" sounds less like a milestone and more like a sequel to the waiting room. "Early access 2? Come on," one Reddit user wrote. "When did we start accepting this nonsense?"
That frustration is understandable, even if it is slightly misplaced. Subnautica 2's Steam page has always said the early access period would last two to three years, and the game only launched in May 2026. It has already sold more than five million copies and survived a very public legal battle between Unknown Worlds' founders and Krafton. Early Access 2.0 is a sign that development is moving, not that it is stuck. Still, a date would be nice. Subnautica 2 is available on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
