New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns assessed the team’s shortcomings after Tuesday’s 106-100 season-opening loss to the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden.
The defending NBA champions raised their title banner and received championship rings before tipoff, but the 76ers spoiled the festivities. The Knicks led 58-54 at halftime before Philadelphia seized control in the third quarter.
Towns, who finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, pointed to the deficit his team faced and cautioned against expecting the same late-game execution that fueled last season’s championship run.

“I just thought that we put ourselves too much in a deficit, and you know we’re not that Knick team yet from last year.”

The 76ers outscored the Knicks 29-18 in the third quarter, turning a four-point halftime deficit into an 83-76 advantage. Although New York won the fourth quarter, 24-23, the Knicks could not erase the gap.
Towns connected on a three-pointer with 4:37 remaining to bring his team within one point. However, the Knicks scored on just two of their final eight possessions, allowing Philadelphia to hold on for the victory.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 21 points, while Tyrese Maxey dropped a game-high 28 for the 76ers. Towns recorded his double-double in 24 minutes as New York opened the 2026-27 campaign at 0-1.
Towns explained that last season’s team developed its spark and execution over time. His comments reflected concern that the Knicks were relying too early on their championship-level execution before rediscovering that same consistency.
Philadelphia improved to 1-0, spoiling a night devoted to the Knicks’ championship celebration. For New York, the opener underscored Towns’ point that last season’s late-game reliability cannot simply be assumed at the start of a new campaign.
