Kohima, Oct 19: The Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) has urged the state government to introduce a 5% reservation in eligible government jobs for meritorious sportspersons, proposing that the provision be considered in upcoming Nagaland Police and Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) recruitment exercises.
In a representation to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the association called for a comprehensive policy to recognise sporting achievements in public employment through reserved vacancies, additional marks in recruitment and special appointments for athletes with exceptional accomplishments.
Citing the Central Government’s provision for reserving up to 5% of vacancies for meritorious sportspersons in specified Group C and erstwhile Group D posts, the NOA urged Nagaland to explore a similar arrangement, subject to state recruitment rules and necessary amendments.
The association also proposed a graded system of additional marks for athletes who have won medals at recognised state, national and international competitions. It sought specific recognition for medal winners at the Nagaland State Games and Nagaland Para Games, with recruitment weightage determined by the level of competition.
For athletes with outstanding international achievements, the NOA proposed direct appointment to suitable government positions, including Group A and Group B posts, wherever service rules permit. It also called for out-of-turn promotions and other career incentives for serving government employees who win medals at major international events.

Emphasising the need to support para-athletes, the association sought special leave for competitions and training camps, medical and injury assistance, and flexible duty arrangements wherever feasible.
To examine the proposals, the NOA recommended setting up a committee comprising representatives from the Home Department, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, Police Headquarters, Youth Resources and Sports Department, NSSB and the association.
The proposed committee would review existing policies, recommend amendments to recruitment and service rules, and establish eligibility and verification mechanisms to prevent misuse of sporting certificates.
The NOA has urged the state government to assess the feasibility of implementing the proposed measures in forthcoming police and NSSB recruitment exercises, subject to the necessary administrative and statutory approvals.
