A giant bronze Yoda statue stands on a brick fountain in a quiet San Francisco park. Behind it, four red-brick buildings house some of the world’s most advanced digital film studios.
Rolling hills, streams, and old trees surround the site. In 2005, film director George Lucas opened this 850,000-square-foot digital arts campus on 23 acres of a former Army hospital site inside the Presidio of San Francisco. Two decades later, the Letterman Digital Arts Center has changed from a military medical site into a major creative hub. Here, classic park scenery meets modern film technology. The campus serves as the global headquarters for Lucasfilm, visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic, and game development teams.
It brings together thousands of artists, programmers, and filmmakers on a site that remains open to the public.
From military hospital to digital studio
The land where the campus now stands has a long history. According to historical records published by the Presidio Trust, the site was once home to the Letterman Army Medical Hospital, a large concrete building built in 1969. The hospital was named after Dr. Jonathan Letterman, who served as medical director for the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War.
When the Presidio military base closed in the 1990s, the land was transferred to the National Park Service and the Presidio Trust.
Officials needed a lasting way to reuse the park’s military buildings and land. George Lucas won the right to redevelop the 23-acre site in 1999, beating several other commercial developers. An article in Wired magazine noted that Lucas proposed a low-rise design that would be kinder to the environment and fit the natural landscape of the historic park.
His plan aimed to avoid blocking the area with tall office towers. Demolition of the old 10-story hospital began soon afterward. Construction crews crushed and recycled thousands of tons of concrete from the original building. They used the material to build the foundations and underground parking garages for the new campus. This recycling work helped the complex earn a LEED Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
At the time, it was one of the largest environmentally certified commercial projects of its kind.
A village built for creative artists
The Letterman Digital Arts Center officially opened on 25 June 2005 with a private picnic for more than 2,000 staff members and guests. The total construction cost was about $350 million. The campus has four separate buildings designed in the classic Bay Area Craftsman style. They have dark red-brick walls, wide roof edges, and large windows that let in natural light.
From the outside, the buildings look more like a historic university campus than a high-tech visual effects center.
Inside, however, the campus has miles of fiber-optic cables, large computer servers, and modern screening rooms. Moving to the Presidio allowed Lucasfilm to bring its different divisions together under one roof. Before the move, teams worked at several locations in Marin County, including Skywalker Ranch and Big Rock Ranch.
Moving Industrial Light & Magic to the Presidio brought computer animators, sound designers, physical prop makers, and company executives together so they could work more closely. The move brought around 1,500 jobs directly into San Francisco.
Designed around a public park
One of the main features of the Letterman Digital Arts Center is its focus on public space. Although the office interiors are secured to protect the secrecy of movie production, nearly 17 acres of the 23-acre property remain fully open to the public.
Landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and his team designed the open grounds to blend with the surrounding national park. The grounds include green meadows, paved walking paths, a lagoon supplied with recycled water, and native plants that need little water.
According to documentation from The Cultural Landscape Foundation, Halprin planned the park to offer views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and the historic Palace of Fine Arts.
The outdoor areas give visitors a quiet place to walk, eat lunch, or sit beside the stream. The park has few visible barriers, making the change from public parkland to private office space hard to notice.
A steady destination for film fans
The public grounds have become a popular stop for tourists and local residents. The best-known spot is the entrance courtyard of Building B, where a life-sized bronze statue of Master Yoda stands on a stone fountain.
Visitors often come to the courtyard to take photos with the statue. On weekdays, the main Lucasfilm lobby is open to the public. Inside, visitors can see life-sized statues of Darth Vader and Boba Fett, old movie props, and film awards.
Even after The Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilm in 2012, George Lucas kept personal ownership of the buildings. Lucasfilm and the other digital arts companies continue to rent their office space directly from Lucas under long-term leases. Over the past two decades, the campus has shown how an old urban site can be reused successfully. By replacing a concrete hospital with a digital arts campus set within a public park, the project kept open green spaces while giving the Bay Area film industry a permanent home.
