MECHANICVILLE - Only three scores from each school counted toward determining a team winner Tuesday in the Section 2 Class C-D golf championship at the Fairways of Halfmoon.
When one of the players shoots even par, a school's chances of winning rise significantly.
Tanner LaTorre, a two-time Section 2 individual champion from Ichabod Crane, matched par 72 to earn medalist honors and led the Riders to a seven-stroke victory in the team competition.
LaTorre, a senior who was runner-up at last week's sectional tournament after winning the previous two years, was six strokes clear of Greenwich's Brett Traver and Coxsackie's Nico Galante in the individual standings. LaTorre carded three birdies and three bogeys.
The Riders got an 88 from LaTorre's brother Mason and a 94 from Keegan Mullins to post a seven-shot victory over Voorheesville, whose three players were within four shots of each other.
Each of the 24 teams brought four players. The bottom score wasn't included in the team total.
"It definitely helps," first-year coach Cameron Holzhauer said of having the elder LaTorre. "He's a good guy to watch. He's very special. They all have learned so much from him. He's been great to the young guys on the team, too. It's been great having him all year long. He's a big leader."
Tanner LaTorre couldn't stay around for the awards presentation - or interviews - because he was getting his senior photo taken, so Mason met with the media. The LaTorres first got media reps in 2022 when both qualified for the Drive, Chip and Putt national finals in Augusta, Ga.
"I don't really know (what to expect), because I didn't really know the other teams that well," Mason said. "I don't know if we were good enough, especially because we lost a lot of people. We lost two seniors last year that were pretty good."
Saratoga Catholic finished third, nine behind the Riders. Defending C-D champion La Salle has moved up to Class B.
Ichabod Crane finished second last year competing in Class B.
"I'm lucky to have so many great golfers with me," Holzhauer said. "It's been a great year. It was awesome to watch them today. They played great all the way through.
"We graduated a lot of guys last year. At the beginning we were piecing together the top six, but they all made huge leaps to get to where they were. It was awesome to see some of the guys that really weren't golfers before the season take huge leaps."
Classes A and B will conduct separate tournaments, playing simultaneously, on Wednesday.
